My name is Walt McKinley and I'm new to NOVA. I'm active duty military and recently bought a bass tracker to get me off the shores and on bigger bass. I know that the potomac is the place to fish for most fishermen on here, but I'm more of a lake fisherman. Can anyone give me any decent lakes in NOVA ... I live near quantico to give some sort of geo-reference. Any help you guys can give me is appreciated ... I've looked at google maps to see where there are some lakes close to my house, but they all look pretty darn small.

Thanks,
Walt

Wonderful having you with us.

Just don't mess up the traffic in Northern Virginia!!!!

As for using your Tracker please consider the following:

Hope Springs Marina outside of Stafford on Aquia Creek.

Nice place to launch and trailer the boat.

Safe place to park the vehicle and trailer

$20 parking fee is steep but it is OK for what you get.

Check the weather and tides.

If the wind is not out of the east consider hitting Aquia Creek.

It fishes like a big lake.

You do not have to venture out into the Potomac to fish.
Lots of grass in Aquia Creek for you to fish your heart away.

Check out this site for the Potomac tides:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/tides/index.asp

You want a falling tide although any time is a good time on the Potomac.

You can also go to Leesylvania State Park to launch but I think you would enjoy Aquia Creek more even with a longer drive.

Get a GMCO map of the Tidal Potomac so you can see the river and places to launch and where to fish. Finding the launch sites may have to have a recon mission one day so you will know where you are going.

Google the state park and Hope Springs Marina for their addresses and put them in your GPS to find them easily.

Check out Teddy Carr's Outdoor Adventure for his blog on the Potomac. Teddy is a local guide on the river.

Thank you for your service to our country.

Glad you are home "safe" as "safe" as you can get in DC.

Have fun in the traffic!!!

Welcome, if you are more of a lake fisherman you should try Occoquan Reservoir, and Burke lake.  Lake Anna too if you dont mind driving a hour+ away.  If you are interested you can check out the tournaments that are conducted bi-monthly on the Occoquan Reservoir (fountainhead park).

Oh yeah and if you are near Quantico, there are a lot of little lates in Quantico that hold big 8+ # bass.
