boukam Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I have a buddy that has a top water lure that he calls "wakebait" that works insanely well for bass. He had bought it at a cabellas 5 yrs ago but they no longer sell them. He is unsure who the manufature is so I am not able to find it through them. I have searched the net and all I can find is some wooden hand painted lures called "wakebait" from japan but they are not the same and cost $20 a pop. The lure I am looking for is a plastic top water that is very fat in the front and exponentially gets smaller towards the rear. It has one dot on either side behind the eyes and two trebble hooks. It also has a square front lip that sits close to perpendicular to the water surface. It does not dive more that 6" if you reel it in fast. The action in a intermitten jerk that makes a poping noise on top the water and a larger wake than your traditional popper. i have maybe found one that is similar on amazon.com but i think it is much smaller and only comes in yellow. i have had my best luck with the lighter blues/silver in my region. Do anyone know anything about these? what they are called? or best where I can buy them? I have attached a picture of the ones that I found on amazon that look similar to what I am looing for. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted July 10, 2013 Super User Posted July 10, 2013 There are dozens upon dozens of mfg that make wakebaits. It's in a category of its own as it's not really considered a topwater. If you go to tackle warehouse and search out wakebaits you will find a number of different options. They make both large and small wakebaits. Jointed wakebaits...etc..Your description would need to be followed with an actual photo to ID it because there are just too many baits out there that reflect the same design you describe. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Those look like Xcaliburs, I believe they were discontinued, but can be found on eBay. There are quite a few different wakebaits out there, just search eBay, and also check out tackle warehouse, they'll have a bunch. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted July 10, 2013 Super User Posted July 10, 2013 Wakebait is a generic term for a lure that creates a wake when retrieved. many different companies make a version of them, the ones you posted pics of look like an Xcalibur. You can find super cheap ones, and expensive Japanese made ones. BassPro makes "the egg" a good producing wakebait, and the Xcalibur you have pictured are good as well. Both of those can be had for $3-4 each. Quote

They are good solid baits and in decent colors from what I read and hear they have a following. I haven't been able to get my hands on them as they seem to go for more than I am willing to pay, more than their shelf price most times. To the OP if you want something you can pick up or order check out the bandit footloose. BPS sells them as well as online retailers. They run about $6 bucks. Norman also makes a reasonably priced wake bait Here are some more options http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/13159-favorite-wake-bait/ http://www.bassmaster.com/tips/wake-bait-awakening Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted July 10, 2013 Super User Posted July 10, 2013 Try a Manns Bait called a 1-minus. Sells for about $6. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 10, 2013 Super User Posted July 10, 2013 I'll be the bait is a Manns Waker, not the 1 minus which is also a fantastic bait. Manns discontinued it and I've been trying to find something that worked as good and so far I have 1 that is ok. The difference between the Manns Waker and every other wakebait is the Manns Waker will stay up and produce a wake no matter how fast and that action is killer during the summer. The Rapala DT Fat 1 is what I have been using and it does a great job because the body is pretty big so it will throw off a wake even when it is 6" below the surface. Quote

It is the Excalibur and it's been a terrific bait for me, worth hunting down and no I won't sell mine. When it's on this bait gets crushed. Quote
boukam Posted July 10, 2013 Author Posted July 10, 2013 Thank you all for this info. I have been searching 4 yrs for this bait and now have some new leads. I did talk to my buddy and it also has a rattle in it as well. I will try to find the manns walker as what you described it very closely. It stays on top the surface and creates a large wake. Thanks again for all the info I learned a lot I did not know. Now the search continues Quote

I always like what I see from Xcalibur, I have several of their lipless cranks, a couple jerkbaits, and my favorite which they also discontinued was the Jimmy walking lure, I've got about 20 of those. 2 Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Take a look at the Bandit Footloose, cheap and it crushes bass. Quote
Super User MCS Posted July 10, 2013 Super User Posted July 10, 2013 Why is it all the good baits are discontinued? Lol I have heard about those jimmy walking baits....eBay has a few here n there Quote

Lol I have heard about those jimmy walking baits....eBay has a few here n there Yep, Xcalibur alone has discontinued several very good lures. They had a small jerk bait that they called the twitch bait that was essentially a pointer knock off, and it was a very good one. They had a bigger jerk bait they called the XS4, and I think they discontinued that too. I picked up all my Jimmys on eBay, probably averaged about $6 a piece on them, and they can't be beat for that price. I love my LC Sammys, but a Jimmy is virtually on par with them, and is much cheaper, they are top shelf lures. 1 Quote
