bmlum415 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Anyone know if the lews carbon handle will fit a shimano core or the daiwa zillion type r handle? If not is there anywhere in the US that I can purchase a bent carbon handle? Looking for one besides a hawgtech. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I'm unsure about the Lews, but I'm pretty sure it won't work because of the shaft size. The Zillion def won't work. Unfortunately, you're gonna have to go overseas to make it work. You're gonna need a handle, probably a drag star, covered nut, and a retainer. I prefer to use Plat, but there are a number of vendors that can make it happen. I've used JapanTackle and JapanProFishing in the past and they've both been great. Also, SemperFiTackle is making what looks like some really nice stuff at pretty good prices. Quote
Hogsticker Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Daiwa and Lews won't fit a Shimano. Semper Fi has really nice handles at reasonable prices, even on Fleabay. You can use the handle knobs off your Core. Same with the nut and nut retainer, however you can get anodized parts from Semper Fi as well. Make sure you get 4 bearings as well if you need them. Quote
jtesch Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 You can get the Daiwa factory carbon fiber handle for the type R at Tackletrap.com it fits the regular Zillion. While your at it get the spool for the Team Daiwa Z100 it is a huge upgrade over the stock zillion spool, much lighter and faster. I did both plus Boca orange seal bearings and it's like a whole new reel Quote
21farms Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 okay, you have several things going on here. as i understand your question, you want to put a swept carbon fiber handle onto your shimano core reel and are considering the lew's and zillion handles. first of all, shimano has a unique crankshaft size which is smaller in diameter than everyone else's. to get a lew's/revo/daiwa/BPS/pflueger handle to fit onto a shimano crankshaft, you need an adapter called the "barrier breaker" sold by semper-fi tackle. secondly, you don't want to put a swept/bent/offset handle on a shimano reel that was not designed for it as the handle will not clear the drag star. my advice: if you want a shimano with an offset handle, buy the new JDM metanium or the new shimano chronarch Ci4+. if all you want is a carbon fiber handle for your core, buy a straight one from semper-fi. bmlum415 Posted July 10, 2013 Author Posted July 10, 2013 Thank you for the replies. I guess I'm just going to put a hawgtech straight handle on it. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted July 10, 2013 Super User Posted July 10, 2013 I have reels with swept handles and reels with straight handles. There is no detectable performance difference between them. Ditto for carbon fiber vs standard materials. There can be a measurable weight difference between carbon fiber and metal handles, but it is virtually undetectable in use. The difference between a handle with four bearings vs one without bearings is very noticable. This is the only reason I see for spending my hard earned cash on a different handle for any reel. Quote
piscicidal Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Bmlum, We will be coming out with a new swept carbon fiber handle in about two weeks. It will be less bulky than our current handle. The profile shape is designed to be universal...I've measured dozens of star drag dimensions, and sized it accordingly so there will not be issues with fit. If you want, I can send you some renderings of the 3D design, so you can see if it is something you might be interested in. I think the enthusiast types are really going to like this new handle. 4 Quote

I like em pretty good, but nothing I would get rid of a Lews Tp for on a daily basis. Now that you mention it.....I guess I am going to have to try some squarebills and such on one! Quote
