Swim Jig

Lately Iv gotten really into jigging. Since Iv started giving it the time of day, and actually fishing with one, Iv caught a few fish.. I could probably count all of them on two hands, but some of them have been pretty nice. The majority of those bass (and my biggest jig bass) have actually been caught swimming the jig back to me for another cast. So with that said, Im gonna pick up a few swim jigs next time I run to town. Iv always heard swim jigs slay bass and I feel like now is a good time to try them out. A few questions that come to mind is: Are there any major differences between a swim, and any other kind of jig? What kind of trailer to use, a craw,etc? How do you present a swim jig? Specific techniques? Im excited to try one out. The bass that have hit my jig while swimming, have completely lit it up!!

The swim jig provides better movement, kinda like a heavier spinner bait. The football jig is generally heavier and is meant to bounce off the bottom, you can fish a swim jig that way as well that's why I use them over football. As far as trailers go a lot of people like rage tail craws I like to use strike king KVD rodents. They provide more movement and action for the bass to key in on IMO.

The way I like to fish it is pick a spot like Lilly pads or a tree and cast way past it. Then let it sit and slowly bounce it while reeling, like you would a football. Then I stop let it pause and then reel like a spinner bait jerking the rod every so often before I reach my point where I think the fish are posted. Then I let it sit and bounce it along the bottom close to that point and then reel it like a spinner past it. A lot of times that works but more often then not you will get one before you get to the spot you think they are. Sometimes fishing it slow is the way to go if you are not seeing a lot of action.

Swim jigs have a specific set of features.  Slender head, thinner weed guard, sometimes a smaller gauge hook and a larger more effective bait keeper.

 

There are a number of trailer options. Query the forum articles.  There's a lot of excellent  information.  What ever trailer you choose, it should have action and vibration and help keep the jig in the upper level of the water column. I like the swim jig Siebert makes and throw it anywhere there is shallow cover. I work it with twitches, quick start and stops and bump cover. The bluegill color with a matching Rage chunk has been good to me.

I just started learning the swim jig this year and it has become one of my best producers.  My best trailer so far has been a 4" grub, and I don't impart any action to it.  Just cast out let it sink to desired depth and reel it in.  The fish in my avatar was caught on a football head that I was swimming.  The ONLY reason I was swimming the football head was because I did not have any swim jigs and I wanted to try it before I invested a bunch of money in the technique.  The problem with swimming a football head is that it has a thicker weed guard and a heavier hook than necessary.  There have been fish that I have lost due to not being able to get a good hookset on the fish.  With a swim jig and the thinner hook I don't think that will be a problem.  I have since ordered a bunch of swim jigs from Siebert and can't wait to try them out.

Swim jigs are a great lure and can be used just about anywhere in any circumstance and have always produced for me.

I will fish them in grass, around lily pads, around timber, docks, etc....

They have a more bullet shaped head for coming thru the grass a lighter weed guard and a lighter hook as well as a smaller skirt.

Be sure to invest in some quality swim jigs so you don't get discouraged. North Star, Seibert, Dirty Jigs, Strike king and others all make excellent swim jigs.

For trailers thats up to you. You can basically use anything you want.

I use 5/16oz North Star original swim jigs and use a Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper trailer. Been my best producer this year. I also will use a Kinami 4inch single tail grub or a Havoc Subwoofer.

I think Im gonna go ahead and buy one or two. It wont hurt to try. I love jigging, but I just started learning the technique and it hasnt produced how i thought it would.. That could also have something to do with the time of year.

i like the strike king kvd heavy cover swimjig in sexy shad with a zoom super speed craw on the back or the regular ultravibe speed craw, iv had luck with a zoom horny toad with about an inch bit off it. ive even put a shadilicious on the back of it. but u can also swim any jig, caught alot of nice fish swimming a eakins jig over and thru grass. anywhere theres cover and where the spinnerbait bite has slowwed down and the fish want something more subtle than a spinnerbait or a chatterbait has proven a good time for me, spring thru fall. just my experience is all. hope this helps u, if ur on a budget, try ur favorite jig and trailor in different situtations while swimming it. experiment with diffrent trailors also. let the fish tell you what they want is my best advice, there is no substitute for time on the water. good luck and hope this helps

I really like the outkast and dirty jigs swim jigs.  They both come through cover really well.  as far as trailers, you can pretty much use anything as long as it has some sort of movement.  skinny dippers, smaller swimbaits, single tail grubs, double tail grubs, craws, chunks.  i usually use a craw or a chunk type bait when I want to move more water and slow the jig down more.  with lighter swimjigs i use a single tail grub so I can move the jig faster towards the surface.  i throw them anywhere, at docks, lilly pads, trees, rocks, and anywhere I would throw a spinnerbait.  its a great bait that draws a ton of reaction strikes

For trailers I use rage tail menace, rage tail grubs, and havoc subwoofers. Rockchalk swears by the subwoofers so that's good enough for me.
