What To Throw 10" + Worms On?

So I've been reading here that big worms are a good bait to throw in mid summer. So my question is, what do I throw it on, rod, M,MH,H...reel, line, etc? How you would rig it?

My main concern is the line, I got four setups all running braid from 15lb. to 65lb.

And the one I'm thinking I really want to throw it on is a 7'3 H/F Dobyns with 50lb. Is this NOT a good idea?

Don't know the lure weight limits on that rod, but I don't think it is a good idea unless you are adding a weight.  Doubt the rod will load with a 10" worm and bare hook.  I use a 7' MHF with an STX-L and 40# Sufix Performance with a 10" worm and bare 5/0 EWG hook.

I prefer the 7' MHF also for big plastics T'rig or C'rigged, and use 30# Sufix I always run a 6' to 12' leade usually mono, but in gin clear water go to fluoro

I use a 7mh/f avid or 7 h/f avid with 12-15lb flouro, tungsten weight and a nice thick hook.  Last weekend I caught a 5lb 1oz on a 10'' Rage Tail Thumper with a 7'MH/F St Croix Avid and 15lb Invisx Flouro in 21 FOW.

Heavy if adding weight or in/around heavier cover. The reel I would use is a 7.x and for line the comments the other 2 gave will work but I like to go heavier so I would bump up to 50lb just because

I thing new2BC4bass is on the right track, you are forgetting the most important thing what weight are you throwing 1/16 oz thru 1 1/2oz weight will make a difference. Here on Toledo Bend we use 1/4oz Tx rig and 1/2 oz C-rig if the wind will allow. I use 7' MF Shimano Compre . For heavier weights go with 7' MH , 3/4 or 1 1/2 oz weights. I will throw wtless worms with my 7' MF works great! I use 12lb Fluro line. (segar red).

Curado 200 E7 with 14lb BPS Flouro on a BPS 7' MH Carbonlite with a 1/4oz sinker and a 5/0 EWG Gammy hook.  Works fine for me.

i use a 7'3 HF with 5/0 gama hook, on 20 lb flouro, i fish thicker cover and stiffer rod and heavier line and hook allow me to steer away from the cover if fishing heavier cover, il throw up to 65 lb braid for sure. im after a big bite for with that bait and dont feel like i have much control with shorter MH rod, maybe in clearer water possibly an MH, use a lighter wire hook and lighter line but myself, i dont feel comfortable with anything less than 17 when having to really set a hook. deep onen water maybe drop down to a 15 lb pound flouro but the extra few inches at the tip make a big difference in leverage and control imo. hpe this helps and you hook a hawg!!!! im looking forward to pulling some more in myself!!!

I assume you're talking about a Dobyns 734.  Based on my experience with my Dobyns rods (including several 4 powers) I don't think you'd have any issue throwing a 10-inch worm, even weightless, on a 4-power rod since to me they fish a bit lighter than a "true" H and since a 10-in worm already has some weight to it.  Adding weight via T-rig or C-rig will make it even easier to throw.

 

I personally prefer fluoro for worms, but I see on reason 50 lb braid wouldn't work.  Just choose an appropriate leader based on cover and water clarity.

Checked the Champion 734.  It is rated for 1/4-1 oz.  I have several MH rods with the same rating.  So, yeah, in that case a Heavy should work fine.  I am slowly trying fluoro on 2-3 reels.  However, when I am throwing 10" worms, I am throwing into slop.  Braid is tied direct.  Doesn't seem to bother the fish.  I hate losing terminal tackle.

I like something around a 6'6 medium heavy with a fast tip. I always fish mine weighted just because I never thought about weightless. I use an abu rod so it may be a little closer to a heavy action. It works best for casting at least 3/8, but those zoom old monsters are pretty heavy, so you can can use a 3/16 bullet weight and cast just fine.
