ACORO Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 I'm having a hard decision on what to get so I need some input . Looking for something between $100 - $200. Going to be throwing a spinnerbait, Crankbait, maybe buzz and swim bait. Thanks, Adam Quote
MrSwimJig Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 If your not in a hurry I would wait and see about the Daiwa Tatula or the Tatula Type R. If you are wanting to purchase soon the Shimano Chronarch, Pinnacle Optimus LTE, Abu Garcia Revo STX, Lews Super Duty, Lews Tournament Pro etc... all great reels. 1 Quote
Paul Peixoto Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 i have thrown all 3 companies and i like the abu revos. i find they are engineered not put together just my opinion Quote
Arv Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Not to be that guy, but I'd throw in the Shimano Chronarch and Lews Tournament Pro. If you're dead set on the other brands, I'd also wait for the Tatula to come out and hear a few reviews. It seems like its going to be a sweet reel. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 The new Daiwa will be competetive at the price point but nothing head and shoulders above what's already out there. Each brand has pluses and minuses but you're at the right budget for a quality reel. You'd have to try to go wrong and in the end it will boil down to personal preference. I'd go look at and handle some reels and then ask about a specific model for user feedback before purchasing. 2 Quote

I agree with DVT 100%, no matter what reel you want you are in the perfect price range for a good reel. Quote
ACORO Posted July 8, 2013 Author Posted July 8, 2013 How are the Quantum smoke series reels quality and reliability? Anyone have any personal experience with them? Will there be any new Abu Garcia reels coming out soon? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 8, 2013 Super User Posted July 8, 2013 I agree with DVT 100%, no matter what reel you want you are in the perfect price range for a good reel. Yup. Nice price range. Of the 3 brands listed I like Daiwa and Abu. Take that opinion with a grain of salt because I don't have any Quantums. If you are willing to go used, you might even find a Daiwa Zillion in that price range. If willing to buy a different brand, then the Tournament Pro or Team Gold (off ebay), or a Chronarch would make excellent choices. A Gen 2 Premier would be great as well. EDIT: I personally feel the Patriarchs are a highly under-rated reel. They would be great reels if they only carried the Shimano name. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 The issue with the Smoke is that the gears get noisy after some use. Nothing that affects performance but annoying some users. It is light and casts well though. Quote
Rangerphil Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 This maybe a little off, but throwing those baits I would consider an Abu 5500 c3! I don't know if you want a low profile or not but that reel will handle any spinnerbait, crankbait or any other lure you decide to throw. It will cast a mile and is UNDER your budget! Quality is there for life and you can take the extra money and put it into something else! Please do not under estimate these reels because of their price! Quote

But I would add taking the rod you intend on mounting the reel on (no matter spinning or baitcasting) with you (most tackle shops and big box stores will allow you to do this). Just to get a feel of how the system (system = rod & reel) will feel in your hands.. Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 8, 2013 Super User Posted July 8, 2013 How are the Quantum smoke series reels quality and reliability? Anyone have any personal experience with them? Will there be any new Abu Garcia reels coming out soon? I got a Smoke 150 HPT and a 100 SPT and hands down they are the best bait casters Quantum has put out. This is my 3rd season and no problems, the 150 is great for jigs, soft plastics and any technique were you want a quick line pick up, I even use it for frogs. Quote

Dramer77 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Which one would you prefer out of the 150 HPT or 100 SPT ? i think the 150 just holds more line... if you like quantum , check local dicks sporting goods, i picked up a year or 2 old model quantum energy Pt,, the one with the burnt titanium accents... got it for $74 on clearance.. not bad for a reel that was $199... tackle warehouse still selling it also.. they have it for $128.. id say its alot like the smoke... its casts smooth and you can bomb lures pretty far.........Id post a link to tackle warehouse , for for some BS reason is says the admins do not allow links from that site Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 9, 2013 Super User Posted July 9, 2013 Which one would you prefer out of the 150 HPT or 100 SPT ? The 150 is my favorite, it not only holds more line but there are some subtle differences. I like the fact it has a clicking spool tension knob which you may also know as the cast control knob, the 100 does not have this, and it also has the ACS 3 and the 100 has the micro ACS, big difference. The ACS 3 works by applying pressure so there is an infinite amount of settings, all you do is turn the knob as far as you think you need and there are markings on the side that you can use as a guide, very good break system. ACORO Posted July 9, 2013 Author Posted July 9, 2013 I've been looking around some more and how are the Okuma Helios. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 9, 2013 Super User Posted July 9, 2013 I've been looking around some more and how are the Okuma Helios. There are a couple threads on this reel. A search should locate them. Alternatively I would start a new thread because people are going to open this thread if they have any comments to make about the original 3 reels in the title. From what I have read, the Helios is a nice reel. Bought my like new Lews Tournament Pro from a guy who was impressed enough with the Komodo to want to get a Helios as well...thus he sold the TP for the funds. Quote
aqualkinbush Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I have a Quantum smoke and I love it. They are super light I've only had mine since early April but I have had no issues with any excess noise. I have fished it heavily since I purchased it. 2-3, 4-12 hour trips a week. I would imagine as long as you perform proper maintenance it will never have any serious problems. Quote
harmon Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Go on EBAY and find a GEN 2 REVO STX, I have bought several in the last month for 150.00 brand new. You cannot beat that price in any brand, PERIOD!!! Quote
ACORO Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 I appreciate everyones opinion and input..... Thanks , Adam Quote
Super User deep Posted July 12, 2013 Super User Posted July 12, 2013 Seems like I'm a little late to the party, but the correct answer starts with an S. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted July 12, 2013 Super User Posted July 12, 2013 Shimno Chronarch 200e7 would be my choice. As for Daiwa i was going to take the plunge on the Tatula r but after seeing that new feature with casting. I decided i am going to wait. Quote
