das028 Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 There is a lake close to my work that I usually fish when i get off. I've been there the last 3 work days, and got nothing but a bite on a magnum fluke (greenish color), but lost it. The thing is this lake gets lots of pressure, mostly from bobber guys, so I try to get to spots where nobody is. I'm also fishing from the bank. I think the fish may be spooked a bit and may be in deeper waters. I've fishing all the normal types of cover, and nothing??? Maybe they are there, but it does seem like they are deeper. This lake also has a muskie stock, to control the crappie, so it would be awesome to catch one of them. Temp today, should be around the mid 80s with scattered t-storms. Water is fairly clear around the banks, but not so much out deeper. The bottom is pretty rocky, with lots of cover. underground logs, etc... So with the info I've given, though it may be vague, any tips would be helpful. Types of bait? Color? Action? fish slow/fast? anything? thanks in advance fellas Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Welcome to summer bass fishing. Are you in a boat? If so is there a thermocline yet? Marking fish? Shad in the lake? What time of day you fishing? Try morning, evening or get out at late night if its allowed . My lake they bust the shad early till about 9am and then before sunset. Otherwaise they suspend 10-15' down (thermocline is at 15') and are pretty much uncatchable. Nothing really on the banks. Quote

I've fished the back of a boat with a guy over a dozen times and I've seen him catch 4+# smallies 4+#largemouth and last week he boated 3 muskies on this lure.. Given we are fishing bass with 140lb fluro leaders and 80# 832 braid with musky rods and reels... Quote

aceman387 Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 I would texas rig a rubber worm with a bullet weight and cast it out where all those logs are you spoke of.I have alot of luck this time of year with the berkley power worms with the ribbon tail.I like blue fleck or even black .I would also try a baby brush hog in green pumpkin color in place of the worm. I like to vary the size of the worm weight to see if the bass are in a chasing mood or go with a small weight for slow fall,if nothings happening cast it out and let it sit for a minute before retrieving, Quote

das028 Posted July 8, 2013 Author Posted July 8, 2013 I usually fish from about 4:30 pm untill 9ish. I figured at first i'll start with a Jig and work the bottom slow. Maybe a trick worm or a ribbon worm all texas rigged. Might throw a senko too, and work that slow. Then towards the evening when they seem to be more aggresive i'll try a spinner and/or chatter Quote
LTBC_mmcallum Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 If it's really dark water I suggest a white jig, toss it out and bump it. Maybe a swim bait, one of the shad colors. If you've got'em I might also try a white/ chartreuse spinner, toss it out and work it like a jig while giving a slow retrieve, the noise could bring some bass out if cover and hopefully right on to your hook Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted July 9, 2013 Super User Posted July 9, 2013 Skunked Again! Its getting personal now! If it's a very pressured lake, then I say fish slow! No power fishing. Try weightless plastics, match it to the forage you see around the lake. One of the things I'd recommend use to drop shot to cover. Meaning if you see cover, basically pitch your bait using the drop shot method or if you want use a small jig will do. I find myself loving the drop shot after I learned how to fish it effectively the past 2 months. I usually use small soft plastics..4" worms straight or ribbon tail, creature bait or baitfish imitation like a Powerbait Minnow (one of my favorites) or regular fluke. Standard rules apply natural color in clear water. If not clear I'll go darker..this is in general though. Just try and throw things others aren't, for example this local pond I fish, I have never caught anything with a plastic worm (bass or pike). It is very pressured by worm and bobber guys, so when I changed from a worm to baitfish imitations and crayfish, my luck changed big time. Also it sounds like they liked your fluke, maybe you should down size to a super fluke in white pearl which is my favorite color. Quote

I've fished a lot of lakes and ponds that are beat like a drum and done well with weightless 6" U tail worms, T-rigged weightless tubes, safety pin type spinners, and Zara pup top water baits. If all else fails, I break out the fly rod. Quote

What i do is use any topwater or swim bait and make random swipes in all different directions. Also bump the cranks, swimbaits, or spinners on any object including the ground. Quote

bartdude186 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 downsize your bait,and fish it slower. the magnum flukes catch fish but i have caught more 5+ pounders on a regular super fluke. tie on a baby bass or watermelon red super fluke,fish it slow,REALLY slow and you should catch some fish.Also be sure that if the water is clear not to use too heavy of a line, i have had days with a fluke that the difference in 14 and 10 pound line was the difference in getting skunked and catching a fish every other cast. 1 Quote
