on youtube there is a video of shaw grigsby and a few others tieing a knot they use for floro. not sure they named it but I have two cranks tied on using the knot but have not thrown them yet. as for jigs I use 20lb McCoy and 15lb McCoy on all other rods...have never had a broken line in 15 years..

That knot is the SanDiego Jam.

I had the same problem with Vanish when I first started using it.  Turns out I was using the wrong knot.  I was also using the improved clinch.  Try the San Diego Jam.  Since I've switched to that knot I've had zero problems.  And use Vanish quite a bit.

Interesting there can be 2 pages of negative stuff on Berkley made floro, 3 pages complaining about a Abu spinning reel and in the general forum a thread is locked for commenting about BPS' poor shipping practices.  Oh yeah we cant complain about sponsors listed at the right....duh

Vanish sucks, Seaguar or sunline with a palomar knot and wet it before you tighten it

I agree with your line brand choices. However, a palomar knot is not the best choice for fluorocarbon. The line crosses back on itself when tying this knot and it weakens the line. There are many good alternatives, I prefer using the pitzen knot.

We almost should have a tagged thread about berkley vanish. This thread is almost identical to the one posted not that long ago.

I gotta say I had no problems ever with 14lb vanish on my fluke setup..used it for 3 year with no problems. Must have gotten lucky. That being said, I switched to higher end fluoro like sniper shooter and invizx and haven't looked back. Invizx has stretch but is smooth casting.

Don't give up on flouro just yet.  I was actually just getting a couple rods together for in the morning and wanted one to throw topwater and then switch to something else after the am topwater bite died.  I had trouble finding a rod I wanted to use WITHOUT flouro.  I would suggest trying Seaguar Invisx and Abrasix.  Also check into a good co-poly like Yo-Zuri hybrid!

Excellent advice!

Ok guys, ill start off by saying i usually fish all my rigs with 10# mono, except for my jig rod which was given to me by a buddy. I never thought to ask what lb. line was on there. Im also new to fluorocarbon. I stopped in by walmart after work to grab some Berkley vanish 12# fluoro. Spooled it up and threw a jig on there. Improved clinch knot... Now to why Im ticked lol.

I get out to my local pond to mess around with the new line. Casted once to the middle to see how everything felt and it was good. Second cast i threw parralel to the bank. Let it sit there a few seconds, and felt the bad boy slam the jig!! I set my hook, and everything was golden.. He looked to be about 3 pounds. When i got him to the bank, i pulled on my line to grab him, and the line snapped. He hit the water, and took off with my jig.

Thats my first experience with fluoro. How did this happen? What lb. test do I need to buy for jigging?

One of my fishing partners had rods with 12# vanish and 10# Vanish. The 10# worked great, but the 12# broke and broke and broke until he finally figured it out.  I think he lost at least 3 fish. I fish bass pro excel Mono or berkley Big Game Mono, except for Power Pro Braid for frogs and i do just fine.

I been using Excalibur silver thread copolymer line for many years. But a tighter

Budget I figure it was time to switch to a cheaper copolymer line another affordable brand. My point is not all the copolymer lines are the same too I been having problems keeping my knots tight too. I think it's time to switch back to what works in the past for me I found out the hassle just isn't worth saving the $$$'

.

Now I'd like to try the hydrocarbon line but do I use leaders or spool it? Does it have no stretch like copolymer?

Geez...

There are two great copolymer lines: P-Line and Yo-Zuri.

Yo-Zuri is much more "user friendly".

Well, I just checked my line, and it wasnt my knot. There was a clean break in the line. I wish I would have known to stay away from it.

Thinking of just going back to a heavier test mono. That sorta left a bad taste in my mouth.

If you don't like fluoro (I don't like it much either), go with copoly. It has some qualities that mono has that fluoro doesn't and vice-versa. It is a nice medium between the two lines.

try the p line copoly, wont break the bank, think you can get 300yrds for under 20 bucks at bass pro or tackle w. offers the best of both worlds. but fluro has a place in the boat. try not to lift the fish up by the line , easy way to break one off. always makes me feel bad that the hooks are stuck in them. treat them good today and enjoy great fishing later.

Basically what it comes down to is "you get what you pay for". I look at it this way: is it really saving money if I buy a cheaper fishing line, only to lose several $5-$10 lures while fishing it?

Seaguar, Seaguar, and some more Seaguar.

X3. InvizX all the way

seaguar!!! start with red label, invisix even better, abrasix even better, but im scared to get some tatsu! lol but vanish, not a good idea, although i have heard some good things about the 100% flouro from the same company and there is a new pro grade flouro thats suppose to drop sometime after icast but i think is menat for spinning gear. i dont think it would hurt to go up to 17 flouro just due to the fact u might need the bigger line due to from i read you fish from the bank, you are kinda limited on space and with the larger line you can horse the fish a little more, i use the biggest line i can get away with honestly n thats never been a hinder to me although some flouros are slightly stiffer in the larger sizes but seaguar invisix is great! but maybe try the advice above in the threads and hopefully it wont happen again!!! good luck bro!
