Ok guys, ill start off by saying i usually fish all my rigs with 10# mono, except for my jig rod which was given to me by a buddy. I never thought to ask what lb. line was on there. Im also new to fluorocarbon. I stopped in by walmart after work to grab some Berkley vanish 12# fluoro. Spooled it up and threw a jig on there. Improved clinch knot... Now to why Im ticked lol.

I get out to my local pond to mess around with the new line. Casted once to the middle to see how everything felt and it was good. Second cast i threw parralel to the bank. Let it sit there a few seconds, and felt the bad boy slam the jig!! I set my hook, and everything was golden.. He looked to be about 3 pounds. When i got him to the bank, i pulled on my line to grab him, and the line snapped. He hit the water, and took off with my jig.

Thats my first experience with fluoro. How did this happen? What lb. test do I need to buy for jigging?

Did the line snap or did the knot unravel? Check for a little curl at the end of the line. If it is there your knot failed. Try a uni-knot or palomar. Other than that, everything I have heard about that fluoro is bad. Supposedly it breaks extremely easily. Get some good fluoro. I use 17lb for jig fishing.

Thanks for the reply man. Ill check my line, and ill try some newer line. Any brand i need to check out?

If you can afford it go for the premium fluoros like Sunline Sniper or Gamma Edge. Some other good ones that are slightly cheaper are P-line, Seaguar, and Bass pro shops XPS fluoro. Just stay away from anything berkley when it comes to fluoro IMHO.

Isn't the joke about Berkley Vanish that the line sucks so bad, that you'll watch your fish vanish with your lure when it breaks? Could've sworn there was a thread about this not too long ago.

Yea. Take it off...save yourself the headache. Seaguar Red Label has been good to me.

I've used Sunline Super for a year or so and just started using their Sniper. I haven't had any problems from either one.

Well, I just checked my line, and it wasnt my knot. There was a clean break in the line. I wish I would have known to stay away from it.

Thinking of just going back to a heavier test mono. That sorta left a bad taste in my mouth.

Vanish. Your lures will "vanish", called that for a reason.

Don't give up on flouro just yet.  I was actually just getting a couple rods together for in the morning and wanted one to throw topwater and then switch to something else after the am topwater bite died.  I had trouble finding a rod I wanted to use WITHOUT flouro.  I would suggest trying Seaguar Invisx and Abrasix.  Also check into a good co-poly like Yo-Zuri hybrid!

If its your dedicated jig rod,you may want to try a braided line..i was throwing my med-hvy rod,30# power pro w/ a 15# flouro LEADER..[there is a difference between FC line and leader material] all day today and never swithed set-ups.

Fished a 3/8 oz. arky jig most of the day in the milfoil beds,switched over to a 1/2 oz.spinnerbait,and ended the evening with a spook..worked fine for all of these applications.

I know there are better set ups for technique specific baits,and i use them often,but this has consistantly been my favorite "all-in-one" combo.

As soon as I read that part, I knew already.  It isn't floro that is the problem, Vanish is HORRIBLE.  Don't buy Stren either, get one of the lines the guys have suggested above.

Changing brands is not a bad idea, while at it I'd step up the line weight a little and be sure to wet your knots. I'd also go with a Palomar or something else better than the clinch for fluoro.

I second that. Havent used any heavy stuff, but I like the red label for finesse and shakey heads so far. Cheap too, I think I paid $12 for 250 yards. 

 

I would use either 17 or 20 for jigs.

Try vicious flourocarbon its strong smooth and about the same price as vanish but a much better quality id use no less than 17# and wet your line before tying knots on fc. and retie often especially after a fish or snag as they can compromise your knot

Im sure that bass with the jig still stuck in it isnt too happy as well.

I wonder if that is now a status symbol to the other fish it meets.Like, Hey guys look I broke that sucker of took its jig, Should have seen the look on its face as I swam away. It thought it had me but I fishtailed it out of there.

I've been using Invisx on my spinning outfit, and Trilene fluorocarbon on my casting set-up, both with the Trilene knot and have yet to have a problem. 

 

As for your jig, you could always invest in a pair of goggles and a snorkel.

I use Sunline sniper but it can be expensive. That being said the Berkley 100% fluorocarbon is pretty good stuff. Depending on what you fish braid might not be a bad choice either. Also as mentioned step up to a higher test 17-20

on youtube there is a video of shaw grigsby and a few others tieing a knot they use for floro. not sure they named it but I have two cranks tied on using the knot but have not thrown them yet. as for jigs I use 20lb McCoy and 15lb McCoy on all other rods...have never had a broken line in 15 years..

Fluoro is an interesting animal. Most of these somewhat brittle lines will snap if you try to lift or move a fish by pulling on the line. Could this have been part of the problem? Well that and Vanish is pretty terrible.
