My First Jig Rig, How Did I Do?

Hi Gang!

So since I discovered that all the big fish are hiding deep and want a slow presentation here in S.FL. now, I decided to get some jigs and trailers after reading the massive pinned thread on jibs in this section. So I bought:

 

1) Booyah Boo Jigs in 4 different colors (Black/red, black/blue, brownish mix, and greenish mix) 1/2oz with 5/0 hooks.

2) Booyah Baby Boo Jigs in 3 similar different colors, not sure the weight but 5/16oz i think.

3) Strike King Rage Tail Chunk in 4 different colors (dark blue, dark green, redish, and brownish)

 

I'll be fishing on a 6'8" MH/F Compre rod and Curado reel.

 

There were a lot of options available at the store, but since I love the booyah frogs, I figured I'll get their jigs and I read in the epic jig thread that rage tails are good too, so... noob does as noob does... I'm clueless, NEVER fished this bait and technique before.

 

So do you guys think it's a good starting setup for jigging? I also have other craw fish tails at home that I got long ago and never used since I realized they're for jigs after I bought them :-)

 

Also, the booyah jigs have a head that is flat on one side so it looks like the hook will be sticking up at an angle and so will the tail. I understand it makes a defensive position of craw fish presentation which may be better.

Spool it up with some 50lb braid and you should be good to go. Fish the jigs on the bottom and shake off weeds by popping your rod. When you get a double or triple tick on your line set the hook. Those booyah boo jigs are not the best for grass which you have lots of down there in SF. I would suggest you get some 1/2 oz swim jigs with a cone head design- they come through grass easily.

It will be a good set up if it were me I would have gotten a longer rod plus the shimanos have pretty soft tips but then again I love having the most power I can get in a rod remember to slow down it's very slow but rewarding technique.

Sounds like you have a good set up. One thing I will suggest, myself having recently learned (started, at least) to fish jigs, is to stick with it. I used to tie one on for 15 minutes, not get bit, and give up for the day. To really learn I had to stick with it and keep one on all day, usually resulting in a few nice fish. Hope this helps.

What do you guys think about it having two rattles on each larger jig, over kill or a good attention getter?!?

Well this is preference imo, I like a softer tip (Well more true to the Power ratings), I don't like too stiff for the ratings.  However, you guys are in FL so I can understand you need a powerful rod.  He may have needed to buy a Heavy Powered rod, but I don't believe he's going to be hindered too much.

I like Rattles in grass, dirty water or night conditions... You're set up choices are good IMO, just be patient as you work through the details... Good Luck and Safe Fishing!

I can't find the one I got on your website, it's a craw, but the body is about half the length of the ones you have listed on the site, did I get an older model or something?

He will do just fine I just prefer the crisp feel and not having to jerk the rod everytime I'm In grass or something.
