FrogFreak Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 OK, I just bought a boat (Crestliner VT 17) and the places I used to get to with my 'yak aren't accessable anymore. My trolling motor gets fouled quick. There is a large weed flat area on the lake I fish that has very thick grass on the edges and I just can't get to it. I tried last weekend and I had to clean the trolling motor twice and back out before I burned her up. I love throwing frogs in the slop, what do you guys suggest? Push pole? Any help is appreciated. Super User ww2farmer Posted July 3, 2013 Super User Posted July 3, 2013 What kid of TM? I have a MK Maxxum 70lb, and I can plow my way through mats you could walk on. You have to keep your outboard trimmed up, you don't want that grabbing a wad of crap and causing extra drag. Also keep the TM up high in the mount and keep it on high. Anything lower than 50% for me and it doesn't have enough balls to chew up really thick stuff, but on 75-90% it blows them right off. When I had a MG I had to take the motor out of the water all the time to blow the stuff off that would wrap, the MK don't wrap with weeds, but I do have to lift it out some times to get the huge horse shoe shaped wad of cut weeds that it is pushing along from around the shaft. Kevin22 Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I have a maxxum 70 with a weedless wedge 2 prop. I have to have it 75%+ to chop through coontail mats. But still in an evening of fishing I'll have to raise it and rip off the weeds at least 4 or 5 times. Something that really helps is to raise the motor so the top of the prop just barely get sunder the surface, 1/2" or so. If you go too deep weeds will wrap around your shaft and cause drag which will make your prop wrap with weeds even on 100%. Quote

tnriverluver Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Duck foot push pole is what you need. My MK's (all 3) are useless in the weeds. I don't know when they changed them cause years ago that was there big advertising push about how they were weedless and they actually were for the most part. Quote

X2 Don't use your TM in the weeds, you'll spook the fish big time. You want to go in to the weeds, or the slop, as quietly as you can; if possible, let the wind or current carry you in. When your done in the area and don't care about the noise, then use your TM to get out if you want; I use my pole both ways and have done so for decades. Something to think about is the load a mess of weeds, or beating your way through EAV, puts on a TM. A Duck Foot Push Pole is the way to go. Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted July 4, 2013 Super User Posted July 4, 2013 Everyone ought to carry a push pole if they have room for it. They are handy tools. That being said, here in Missouri, I haven't seen a mat I couldn't drive through, if I felt like it. Just trim up your big motor out of the water and go. Every so often, you will have to pull weeds off of it. Oh, well. The real issue happens when you go to shallow and run your trolling motor into the mud. That is when you are glad you brought your push pole. As an aside, as I get older, I don't feel like driving through mats all that often. My reasoning is that if the fish are in the mats, they will probably be on the outside edge of the same weed line. Quote

Traveler2586 Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Depending on the type of weed, using a TM to cut through them can actually spread the weed throughout the water body faster as the weed cuttings re-root elsewhere; it can also make the patch of weed your fishing thicker over time. Using a Push Pole properly does no harm to the area other than steering up some mud; and you get to build your mussels to boot. Quote

Plus I think going in under power scares a lot of the fish that are hanging in the shallows. The can hear you coming from a mile away. My mission today is to find a PP. Quote
