GSU_LipRipper Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 sammy is pretty expensive and i havent caught that many fish with it on the other hand the spook which pretty cheap i slam bass with it? is there a different way i should be using the two? Quote
lightsout Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I reach for a sammy in calmer water situations.I feel like every sammy other than the 85 is a waste of money. I have owned several of them all (except the really small one). And I think that because the contour of the belly is more dramatic due to the shorter length on this model it has an action the others dont have. The bigger bigger spooks are much more effective than the larger sammys in my hand. Just wish the looked a little more realistic, but hey they still work great! Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 4, 2010 Super User Posted July 4, 2010 I believe it's always more about location than what you present, in any fishing situation. However, given equal condition, I'll take the Sammy every time. Quote
Senkoman12 Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 i wont even touch LC, sebile, yo zuri, etc. becausue they are just too expensive and ive caught tons on spooks and especially in my lake there are tons of pickeral and pike so you tend to lose lures and they get beat up quick Quote
oprcsr Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Ah this is a good thread, as I was thinking about getting a Sammy (have a few old spooks). Quote

I have been using a baby bass jr. spook and the fish love em on the other hand i have purchased a chartreuse shad sammy and the bass dont like them nearly as much? maybe color? maybe they swim different? but i think in general i go to the spook first! Blue Streak Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 The only LC plug I have success with is the pointer and it is in a class by itself. The rest are average at best for me. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 5, 2010 Super User Posted July 5, 2010 I grew up fishing with a Spook, I 've caught hundreds of fish with it but I would purchase the Sammy without thinking it too much, it 's a much easier lure to walk the dog properly, since I purchased my first Sammy my spooks haven 't touched the water .... that will be 5-6 years ago. bandsr4me20 Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 I have used Academy's version of the sammy(atleast it looks like it to me) and I like both. I usually go for the zara spook first though. Picking some of the one knockers up here pretty soon. Quote

Picking some of the one knockers up here pretty soon. Absolutely love the H2O Express "Sammy", you can't beat them for $4. My favorite is their ghost minnow flavor. I caught 6 keepers at sundown last night from the dock. Would have keep on fishing, but the kiddies were ready for daddy to do the fireworks. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 6, 2010 Super User Posted July 6, 2010 The spook walks the dog very easily for me so it gets my nod because of price. Just wish it had better hooks and came in more colors. Quote

I have had the opposite experience, I find the original and super spook very easy to walk. I don't care for how the Sammy sits in the water, every one I've fished sits close to vertical making it hard to initiate the walking action. Quote

WanderLust Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I have and use both but the spook has been x10 more successful for me. Quote

I agree there's nothing easier to walk than a spook (maybe the rapala x walk). I didnt give the sammy a chance after I first purchased one years ago because of that tail down posture, but now I am a fan. You get better hookups plus I think that weight transfer system makes it cast better. Obviously its not gonna be your first choice to deadstick however. I'm seeing more and more topwaters that rest that way. KVD even tail weights certain lures to give them that action! I keep hearing good things about the H20 baits, too bad thers no academy round here. Quote
Jake. Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I like the Sammy better. It seems to get more bites, and I get better hook-ups with it since it sits lower in the water while walking. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 7, 2010 Super User Posted July 7, 2010 I have to agree with the others, the spook in all sizes is a piece of cake to walk, and it's not even my primary topwater presentation, I use a lot more poppers, buzzbaits, and rage tails. Quote
GSU_LipRipper Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 the sammy deff has way sharper hooks and i have never missed a fish with it possibly because it does sit so low in the water. but like i said i have put sure set hooks on the back of all my spooks and they get the job done like no other! bandsr4me20 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Has anyone put a feather hook on the back of a zara spook? I was thinking when the lure was sitting still the tail might make it look injured maybe. Quote
0119 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Ive used a flashabou wrapped tail hook and feathered owner tail hooks. You get alot of nipping bream on the flashy hook. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted July 8, 2010 Super User Posted July 8, 2010 Spook Jrs. are my favorite. I'll take them over Sammy's most days in the waters I fish. Newer Spook Jrs. are different than older ones though. Older Spook Jrs. are more like Sammys, just louder. As someone else mentioned, Sammy's in calmer and more open clear-water flats for me, Spooks in tighter parameters or more stained waters. And yes, you can add a feather tail to most Spooks and be fine, just watch for excess drag/resistance. Will up the number of small fish caught from my experience though, esp. smallies... -T9 Quote
