Big T 74 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I have been throwing drop shot this year a lot more and wanted to get a new rod to do so. I would like to get it at cabelas but wonder witch one to get. Preferably 7 ft for around $100. Can you help me. Thanks Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted July 2, 2013 Super User Posted July 2, 2013 For 100 range, I'd get a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth M/XF. Quote
jtesch Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 x2 on the fenwick although the crucial is more of a true DS rod I have both BTW Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted July 2, 2013 Super User Posted July 2, 2013 x2 on the fenwick although the crucial is more of a true DS rod I have both BTW The issue would be the Crucial won't be 100, but you can find a Fenwick at around 100. I do agree though imo Shimano has the best Drop Shot rods you can get. I love my Shimano Crucial ML/XF. Frankly it kicks ass. I also own a Fenwick M/XF - that I'll use if the ML/XF is too soft. For the most part if I have to go heavier, I'll drop shot with a BC. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 2, 2013 Super User Posted July 2, 2013 The Fenwick elite tech smallmouth 6'9" M/XF spinning rod is my shaky head/drop shot rod, it isn't a true drop shot rod but it is very versatile in that the rod is more than sensitive enough to drop shot with, the question is the line. I don't use braid for finesse techniques so the extra fast action is great, especially in deep water as you will get really good hooksets and while the guide system works great with braid the rod may have a bit too much backbone for a drop shot with braid. If you want a dedicated rod rod for drop shot only or if you might use it for something else but only once in awhile the 6'9" ML/F would be a better choice. It has the same sensitivity with more tip, if I was going to have a dedicated drop shot rod in the $200 or less range then this would be it and it would have more forgiveness to use with braid. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 2, 2013 Super User Posted July 2, 2013 I have a Rapsody Drop Shot rod (Drop 'Em) and I love it! Under $100 too! Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 2, 2013 Super User Posted July 2, 2013 Take a look at the Abu 6'9" ML spinning rods in the Vendetta or Veritas lines. I have been using the Vendetta for a little bit and liked it so much I took my St Croix Avid 7' ML/F spinning rod, which was my dedicated drop shot rod, out of the boat. Quote
ooga0341 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I use a Shimano Compre Medium Xtra Fast in the 7 foot size, and a 6'6" Premier in Medium Light. Both rods do the trick, and are affordable. Quote
BryanM Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 shimano crucial dropshot Second that. This is what I have. Quote

Big T 74 Posted July 2, 2013 Author Posted July 2, 2013 I am kicking around between the veritas and the fenwick elite smallmouth rod. Quote
dgretz Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I was lucky to buy a Cumara drop shot rod when TW had them for 25% off this spring. Its sensitivity is phenomenal. I can tell the bottom substrate and can detect when a fish has plucked the plastic off the hook. Everything else I have feels like a broomstick in comparison. And I have Avid, Crucial, Dobyns champion and others; all nice rods, but not as light in the hand and as sensitive as the Cumara. a bit beyond a $100, however... Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 3, 2013 Super User Posted July 3, 2013 So it is safe to assume you like those Vendetta rod you bought on clearance. Replacing your Avid though? I'm a little surprised. So am I. I liked the Vendetta so much I went out and bought a few more. I don't think they are better than Avids, BUT they are not noticeably inferior either in performance either. The Avid wins in quality of build, quality of components, and warranty, but the Vendetta's are lighter and better balanced. In fact I would rate them some where between the Mojo and Avid. I have no plans on giving up my Legend Tournaments, but I think Abu has won me over on rods in the $80-$100 range and I won't be thinking about buying anymore Mojo's in the future. I have fished them in four tournaments this year ( a win, a 2nd, and two 4th place finishes) side by side with my Legend tournaments, and Vendettas have been in my hand for several fish that have helped...........so I like them. Virtuoso Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Sensitivity wise, my Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth's fish even with my 6'8'' M/XF Avid. The avid, however, has better components and build quality. The avid is also more powerful. For $100 or less, it is tough to beat. Initially, I purchased the M/XF, in addition I got the ML/F. Both dropshot very well, it just depends on the cover I am fishing. Quote

I will give the Avid is more powerful, that is because their Medium is more of a MH. Why I don't like the MH Avid, Mojo or Triumph. Just wayyy to stiff for my liking for a MH power. Pound for Pound I think the Fenwick is a better overall buy over the Avid considering is 70+ more retail. Of course again not saying the Avid sucks, all rods are different in everyone's hands, some like the MH power of St Croix and some like a Fenwick or Shimano like I do. Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted July 3, 2013 Super User Posted July 3, 2013 Glad it has good value! Refreshing to see you don't have to spend 200..lol Considering I paid $30 for a couple of those Vendetta's, it's a win win situation all the way around. I did go out and pay full price for a couple gen2 Vendetta's too, but even at $80 the bang for the buck is pretty high. Quote
