Anyone Else Notice Scatter Rap Doesn't Cast Very Far?

Wanted to try the scatter because it seems like fun lure to try but noticed it is a lite weight lure and doesnt seem to cast as far as I would like. Anyone notice the same?

Well, I havent fished a lot of them, but original floating minnow same size cast farther to me.

it casted fine with my spinning tackle and yes, it does have a very erratic retrieve as long as you don't go to fast which causes it to roll.

I don't know about most, but the two balsa lures that I'm most familiar with are the original floater and Shad Rap. It sounds like the Scatter Raps might be balsa as well.

I get a pretty good distance with spinning gear.  I can't wing it as far on my baitcasters...

Same body's throw the same distance from what I experience. Which is still a poor distance with balsa

The key is to let your rod load-up on the back cast and use a nice fluid forward motion. Don't try to whip it or a lot of times it will just tumble.

8-pound fluorocarbon or mono. Your choice.

 

2000 or 2500 size spinning reel.

 

If you want to give the Rapalas more weight you can add a small clam weight or some lead to the front treble hook.

 

Otherwise, try using your spinning rigs and see if it improves the technique.

Baits with lots of buoyancy are more lively and that's why balsa baits have a fish catching advantage.  Load a balsa bait up with enough ballast that it will cast like a heavy plastic bait and you defeat the purpose of the design by dulling the action.  Does it make them a PITA to cast them?  Yep, but the pain is worth the gain.

I cast my scatter cranks on 15lb seasguar Fluoro on a Lews TP and I can cast one about 35 yards. But I usually only cast short range. Works fine to me.

I use spinning reel with 6lb line. Maybe my casting technique is an issue. I will give it another go.

I use the crank model with a 6'6" spinning rod with 2500 reel and 12# power pro. Cast great and I am catching a ton of fish with it. Every species you can think of LOL
