Bass Dude Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Just curious if anyone still throws these. They used to be very productive, but I haven't thrown them in a long time. Just found some in my garage, I think I'm going to give them a try. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 Yes! Right now the 9" version, Texposed on a 7/0 worm hook is producing up here. I've always thrown them, in the smaller versions, throughout the years. An "oldie, but goodie". Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Great bait. I still use them, alewife, bubblegum, chartreuse pepper and bluegill colors. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 They work great as a trailer on a spinner bait or on a scrounger jig. 2 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 The 4.5" baby slug-o and the 6" slug-o are river smallmouth killers!! I use these and flukes because I consider them to be very different baits. They have a slightly faster sink rate than a fluke and have more dart in their action. What I mean by that is when you twitch you rod tip with a slug-o it will dart to the side or up , down or whatever and then it will almost stop were as the fluke will dart and then sort of glide a bit, it really is hard to put in words but side by side you can see the difference. Anyway, yes, a lot of anglers still throw these, they just don't talk about it much and the alewife and Arkansas shiner are my 2 best producing colors. Quote
Will Wetline Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Years ago I used to fish Slug Gos on a rig I called "Carolina Lite" : 6lb. copolymer line, an 1/8 oz. bullet sinker, a 2' leader and a 3" Slug Go. The smallies ate this with relish. Last season, looking at this little, old, plastic bait I thought it would work as well as today's more expensive, "hip" dropshopt baits. I think it does. A dab of Megastrike doesn't hurt either. Quote
hookset on 3 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 The Slug-go is still in the rotation. BR members have heard me tell the story ( I'll spare you the long version), that the Slug-go inventor gave a bunch to our Bass Club in1990, before the product launch. We of course, gave the bass a royal spanking with these erratic slithering jerk baits. The originals do have a tendency to rise up when they are twitched, so I've gone over to the newer Sinking Slug-go, which is loaded with salt. Try 'em you'll like them. hookset Quote
Super User Darren. Posted July 21, 2013 Super User Posted July 21, 2013 I've got some, but no, don't fish 'em right now. Haven't had any success on them. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted July 21, 2013 Super User Posted July 21, 2013 My old co-worker swears by them. I have them but never found the time to try them yet. It's my fault being stuck in a crankbait rut. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 21, 2013 Super User Posted July 21, 2013 If the bass aren't going after a fluke I will throw a slug-o. I think the slug-o looks bulkier and sometimes that is what they want. Quote
mikeeasttn Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I have been throwing the Slug Go since the early 90's and still use it as my go to jerk bait. The alewife color works the best for me especially on my home lake. Not only will it catch LM and SM bass but have caught stripers up to 14# with it. Quote
JKarbo214 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I have some of these but haven't thrown them much. What hooks/weights does everyone use when fishing these? Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted July 24, 2013 Super User Posted July 24, 2013 I have some of these but haven't thrown them much. What hooks/weights does everyone use when fishing these? Slug-Gos are pretty much my go-to these days. It makes me happy that so few still employ them and everybody loves senkos now because that way the fish aren't accustomed to the action and bait I'm throwing and boy do they smash on slug-gos! Great in hot weather because you can really slow down the retrieve and tease out the action to really tick 'em off. I usually use a Trokar mag worm hook so I can texas rig them and keep the weeds off. If I'm going deeper, I just get sinking slug-gos instead of weighted hooks so the action stays legit. Quote

X2^ I've killed stripers and hybrids on the 6" Arkansas Shiiner Slug-O, along with LMB and SMB. They're still very much in my rotation. Tom Quote
