Lews Tournament Pro Issues

My first issue so far is that unless I have the centrifugal breaks on 0 and magnetic on 6 with zero spool tension I can't cast far or even get a backlash if I tried I adapted to using no centrifugal breaks but today I was fishing a 1/2 oz football jig and when ever I set the hook hard on a decent sized fish a centrifugal break went on and my casting went nowhere any fixes for these issues? Btw I love the reel and the rest of my lews reels that I own they are great but these small issues being fixed would really be nice.

not quite understanding what your saying, so when you set the hook, a centrifugal brake tab will come loose, and on next cast you cant cast far? are the centrifugal brake tabs pushed in? you'll hear a click when they are

I have a Lews TP and I don't have those issues. I would contact Lews maybe you have a bad reel. Info@lews.com

I use no mag and 1-2 tabs on depending on weight of lure. If some wind I'll use mag on 1-3 and keep the cent. the same.

I can't use any centrifugal breaks or else the spool just doesn't gain the speeds to cast with any kind of distance but when I set the hook hard one break ends up going on

Dude, you got a dud, call Lews, they are super helpful.

All of my Lews TPs are awesome, and have had very little trouble that cleaning and re lubing took care of.

yeah you got a bad one. that shouldnt happen at all. call lews tell them whats going on they should help you out no problem..

Before you contact anyone, take the sideplate off, revove the spool, and check the spool race (the track that the spool spins on) ans the spool itslef for oil/water/liquid. It SOUNDS like you may have water or oil on the spool race, which is not conducive to casting. Also, you may have over-oiled the bearings. I had a Gen2 Revo Premier that had the same issue. 60 seconds and a q-tip and it was fixed. Try it.

It doesn't take much to contaminate the tight tolerances in modern reels. It's worth looking into before jumping the gun on a replacement. I can't see how setting the hook will affect brake settings so there's something else at play here.

If that is your next reel then congrats because you are gonna love it. Got mine 2 weeks ago and have only 100% positive, amazing reel that casts a mile.  I have not had any problems with my reel and I have not done anything to it but taken it out of the box and adjusted the brakes from 2 to 1.

My friend who repairs reels tells me that Lews and Shimano's are the best.

 

After reading the posts I agree - something is wrong with the reel.

 

Call Lews and have it replaced unless you want to send it to Delaware Valley Tackle for them to take a look and let you know the problem.

 

I would call Lews first as I am sure that the company wants to know about the problem you are encountering to avoid it in the future.

 

Let us know what you find out and how Lews handles the situation.

Try putting a tiny amount of light oil on the brake race. This will give the centri. brakes less power.

Figured I would update this I took the reel apart I cleaned out the oil and grease and lightly lubed it up again still no improvement next ill try flushing the bearings if not ill be contacting lews also I realized the breaks are suddenly engaging on the cast not the hook set I think the spool is getting a sudden jerk with the heavy weights that I'm throwing it with

If you opened it and examined it, I'd give them a call.

 

My first Lew's was a TP and it is amazing... Decided I wanted another but cheaped out and got a Tourny MG. It sucked. Until I remembered that I never flushed out all of the excess oil and grease they put on the d**n thing. I was so excited when I bought it, I spooled it up and completely forgot, It was night and day after I realized that and cleaned it.

Unless the pins on the centrifugal break are bad, this can't happen, and if you are sure you are hearing the audible click (even with these poor old damaged ear's) when turning them off (all the way down), then you need to return it and let Lew's replace the brake!! I have never heard of this with any centrifugal brake, and as DVT stated earlier, the brake has absolutely nothing to do with setting a hook or reeling, the spool has to spin @ extremely high rpm's for the centrifugal brake pin's to do anything, no way a human can crank that fast!!!

I have 7 Lew's TP's and they are flawless.  Got rid of all my Curados for them.  I don't see how setting the hook could click on a brake tab.  Seems impossible and I have mine open now trying to come to a conclusion.  Call Lew's is my best answer.

I would probably send it in to Lews for replacement of the defective one you bought and then from now on get yourself a Shimano.
