Used A Spinnerbait For The First Time Today.

Just had the best hour of fishing. I used a $1 promo walmart spinner with a white skirt and caught 3 Peacocks in just about an hour. Fished it next to a big pile of algae floating on top of the water, assuming some fish had to be in the shade of it. Sure enough, WHAM. They smashed it.

 

By the 3rd hit my skirt was pretty much torn off. I guess my question is, what is a good durable spinnerbait? I saw a video somewhere on this website where the guy said that if you flick the blade, and it doesn't spin for a while, then don't buy it. The spinners at walmart are all packaged so I can't really check that. Any suggestions?

 

The pond I fish at is visible for about 3-4 ft, then blackness. Also has LOTS of algae floating on top of water, that I'm sure there are nesting bass. Any color suggestions as well?

I've never had an experience with peacocks. I do however know they strike viciously from what I have read about them. I would purchase some terminator spinner baits. Their wire is made of bendable titanium. As far as the skirts, I think it is just the nature of the beast you're catching.

I like War Eagle and Terminator spinnerbaits. People will tell you to always use a trailer of some sort be is a grub or whatever but I rarely do. I do however use  a trailer hook 90% of the time. Unless Im fishing around really snaggy cover. I fish them erratically as possible with pops, twitches and kills every few feet. LOVE ME SOME SPINNERBAIT BASSIN! Thats why the fall and really early spring/late winter and fall fishing are my favorite.

You should use spinnerbait with wire tied skirts too. The rubberband on the cheap ones breaks very easily, especially if a peacock gets a hold of it. Or just do what I do and wire tie them yourself after you buy them.

 Yeah, after that first peacock bite, my rubberband was all the way down by the hook. Had to bring it back up and into position

peacocks are aggressive so youll probably get a lot of baits torn up fishing for them...thats why i use small crank baits usually they can hit them all day and survive lol

Might want to look @ the *** spinnerbait as well.

 

I dig their jigs, and will buy some of their tandem spins when they're finally available.

Caught my first spinnerbait fish at the beginning of this season and its quickly become one of my confidence baits.  For colors, you can't go wrong with white or chartreuse.

The cheapo Wal Mart spinnerbaits probably aren't a terrible choice for you here since you're fishing for a fish that's going to destroy a wire bait pretty fast. I love War Eagles but they're thin wire that I'm guessing a peacock will destroy in no time. Terminators are great because they're titanium so they last a long time but I hate the quick skirts because almost every bite pulls the skirt down. I'd suggest getting some really small zip ties or some bread twist ties and either zip tie the skirt on your wal mart baits real tight or wrap and twist the bread tie on nice and tight to hold the skirt up.

So would you not suggest getting a more expensive spinnerbait, since peacocks are gonna destroy them anyways? And the skirt slid almost completely off in just one peacock.

Not saying you shouldn't, just saying they'll probably destroy it just the same as they do the cheaper ones. They may last a few more fish but then when it breaks you have to replace a much more expensive bait. If you go with a more expensive bait I'd suggest the titanium Terminators.

Terminator spinner baits are my favorite. Buy some extra skirts.

They will get torn up so if you want to continue using them for peacocks use the cheap ones.

For color I would use what is natural to the area..... for instance where I fish we have a ton of baby bluegill... so I use a bait with a little flicker of blue in it.  So just match the forage in your pond.

If peacocks tear up tackle, the titanium baits are going to be a disapointment.  Titanium wire won't get bent, but it is brittle and will break. We spent a lot of cash one year on titanium spinner baits to fish for pike. I don't think one of them came back from the trip intact. The pike just tore them up.

I think that if you use trailer hooks it also keeps the skirt from falling off so easy.
