Super User NorcalBassin Posted June 30, 2013 Super User Posted June 30, 2013 I finally got to put in some good time last week with the Revo PRM 20/GLX BSR803 combo (for small tubes) I purchased about 2 years ago. I had only put in 3-4 hours with the combo since I purchased it and was excited to finally go to a smallmouth fishery for a week so I could use it extensively. It performed great the first couple days, but on day three the reel literally snapped off during a cast. I instantly assumed the reel seat gave way on the GLX but was beyond shocked to see the Premier in 2 pieces. This set up has been sitting in a rod/reel cover its entire life and in no way had any "trauma" since I took it out of the box, so this is absolutely mind blowing. I've never had a bass rod break, let alone a reel. I never even considered warranties for reels and wrongly assumed they were lifetime like high quality rods (reel retails for $249), but the Revo is only warrantied for 1 year. I am appreciating my Shimanos even more and more at this point and feel a bit ripped off by Abu not standing behind their product. Thanks for letting me vent... Quote
EvanT123 Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Wow that's crazy for a reel that costs more than 2 bills. It almost looks like the reel stem is plastic. Quote
TiNuts Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Oh that sucks. I was just thinking about getting one of these. I will be looking into other options. Have you tried calling Abu/Pure Fishing anyways and explaining the situation? They may (or may not) help you out. The worst they can do is say no. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted June 30, 2013 Super User Posted June 30, 2013 I have tried and tried many times to give Abu Revo baitcasters a chance and all but the Skeet Reese series have disappointed me from premature bearing failure, to guide inserts falling out, to bad worm gears, or winding sounds when casting. Nevertheless, the do have good customer support so you can probably replace it and sell it in the flea market when they give you a new reel back and go buy a Shimano or Daiwa! Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted June 30, 2013 Super User Posted June 30, 2013 Sorry for your bad luck, I have the same reel and it has been flawless since I purchased it a few years back. The part you need is called the Stem PN 1221422, it is an easy part to change on these reels the bad news is that it is about a $60 dollar part retail, maybe DVT can get you one a little cheaper or ABU customer support will help out. Good Luck Quote
Diggy Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Thats a first, hopefully they take care of that. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Even though the warranty is expired I'd give it a shot. If you decide to repair it let me know. Quote
fishking247 Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 d**n, i've never seen or heard that happen to any reel 1 Quote
Traveler2586 Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 If you haven't done it yet I'd contact Abu Garcia Customer Support and send them your photos; it looks to me like it's a bad casting with an air bubble at the break point which probably weakened the stem, this I believe would be a manufacture defect. Good Luck Thanks for the specifics... definitely going to have to think about that. I didn't realize you could actually repair such a thing. If you haven't done it yet I'd contact Abu Garcia Customer Support and send them your photos; it looks to me like it's a bad casting with an air bubble at the break point which probably weakened the stem, this I believe would be a manufacture defect. I sent them an email with the pics but haven't heard anything back yet. I put this in as a Google search and found someone with a similar break that Abu did not take care of since it was more than a year since the purchase, but like TiNuts said the worst they can do is say no. I'll let you guys know how this plays out. Thanks! 1 Quote
nocluefisher Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Send them a link to this thread and show them how good or bad they can look to large group of fishermen who spend alot of money on gear. I have seen one post already of a lost sale. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 d**n, i've never seen or heard that happen to any reel X2 Fished until 4 years ago with spinning gear. None of my reels cost more than about a fourth of what your reel cost. Usually a lot less. Never had one break there. Never known of anyone else to ever have one break there. Just goes to show that nothing is perfect. Have to believe it is a manufacturing problem when the handle was cast (made, not fished). Does suck, tho. I feel certain it will be made right. I don't see any tire tracks on the stem. Quote
TNBassin' Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Abu's rep just keeps getting worse and worse. Glad I jumped ship when I did. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 Some time ago I posted about failures that occurred and this is exactly the sort of thing I was talking about. But, those things don't happen in the real world, people argued. Yet, here it is plain as day. I've seen it happen with casting reels as well. GOOD luck with AG customer service, they're usually decent to deal with. Quote

Sorry to hear about the issue, though. As much as I love my Gen2 Premier's and how trouble free they've been, AG is sure having a lot of quality control issues these days. Quote
CTGalloway21 Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 all reels will have breaks. it is funny how we stick to brands. I only use Abu Garcias cause I have never had a problem with them. I have had lemons in Shimano 2 out of 3 reels. A Curado and a Spirex and I haven't used Shimano since. Have you contacted customer service? They will replace it for you. 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 that is why I will not buy any reel without a aluminum or magnesium frame.i have had that happen on graphite frame reels.as far as I know the neck on that reel is a composite. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 I sent them an email with the pics but haven't heard anything back yet. Definitely CALL them. Email is never a good channel for dealing with customer service. Just sit on the line until they give you what you want or escalate to a manager. Quote
loudcherokee Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 hmmm....I see nothing here that a little duck tape won't fix! LC 1 Quote
loudcherokee Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Super glue might be a better. IDunno. I never messed with any of them thar fancy high tech chemicals. Now, with the right amount of turtle wax, that might buff out. LC 1 Quote
