Unknownwaters Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 I was fishing one day with the reel and took the side plate off to adjust the breaking system. I accidentally dropped the side plate and scrambled to prevent it from falling in the lake. When I put the side plate back on, an odd resistance occurs once every complete cycle of the spool. This only occurs when the side plate is locked on the reel. I took the reel apart using the schematics but couldn't find any obvious flaws or problems. Oddly enough, if you take the spool out and press it and spin it in the side plate no resistance occurs. It works totally fine if the side plate is off. Unfortunately I do not have a warranty on it. I was wondering if anyone has ever had a similar problem and could offer some suggestions? I emailed Okuma about the issue but I don't know if it will be of much use without a warranty. This is only my second baitcaster reel and its the first time I have ever had an issue with one, so I am not very experienced with these sorts of issues. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 could you have bent the spool shaft by reacting to the dropped side cover, did it start to slide out and cause to grab for it. Make sure there is no debris in the bearing socket, it doesn't take much a grain of sand a blade of grass anything, remove the bearing from the side cover and make sure the whole socket is clean. if you dropped the reel during this remove the spool and clean and check everything. I f not able to find the problem, have a local repair shop check it, or send it to a service shop. Quote
Unknownwaters Posted June 29, 2013 Author Posted June 29, 2013 doesn't appear to be bent and I couldnt make out any debri in the socket or anywere else. I may just have to take it to a shop. Thanks for your help Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 Loosen the cast control cap before replacing the side cover. Sometimes this relieves slight binding. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Loosen the cast control cap before replacing the side cover. Sometimes this relieves slight binding. That would be a great idea if not already done. I recamend loosening that every time you open your reel up. Even if there is to much tension on the cap I would have it looked at, as that should be felt full time, not just at a certain point every revolution, if we are getting an accurate description of the problem??? I would certainly try it, but there seems to be an alignment problem. I have had an experience with a similar problem on a Curado, the brake pin assembly that holds the pin and is pressed onto the spool shaft, got cocked on the spool shaft, but it was a ticking noise, but I can see how that would rub the drum every time around on some reels. I simple seated it down tight on the spool and was one of the easiest fixes I have been blessed to find servicing reels. On the Okuma I am not familiar with there reel's as I have never serviced one, as they are not very popular around here. Quote

Yea it seems to happen once every full rotation of the spool and only with the sideplate completely locked on. I may just need to get it repaired, problem is that there really aren't any places that repair okuma fishing reels within a reasonable distance of were I live and the few places I can find cost half the price of the reel itself just to repair it. Might as well just look for another good fishing reel on sale. Quote
