Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 29, 2013 Global Moderator Posted June 29, 2013 That sound is added post processing? I always wondered why Jeremy Wade's reels did that. That's pretty silly to do. Some of his casting reels probably are making the noise because he so often bottoms fishes with the bait clicker turned on. If you don't disengage that when you start reeling it will continue to click while you're reeling. I've seen them do it with spinning reels and even low profile casting reels, times like that it annoys me. I don't know if they somehow think that makes it more authentic but it just makes it silly to me. Quote
prjavelin Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 I hate when the host of the show is not even decent at fishing and they are there because they know how to be on camera. Example: JP de rose, tim horton etc etc.  When will anyone be smart enough to give a show to a guy like brent ehler or shaw grisby. these guys are so likeable and very smart and they dont have a show. 1 Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 29, 2013 Super User Posted June 29, 2013 I used to DVR Zona and MLF but every time they would replay it my DVR would record it as a new episode. It would record the same episode 5+ times a weekend easy I don't record them anymore and haven't got to see them in awhile. :-( Quote
RAMBLER Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 One of my pet peeves is the really dumb things people call a fish when they land it. A guy pulls in a fish and then calls it a real "toad" or a "stud" or a "hog". HEY STUPID, IT'S A FISH. Perhaps a really big fish, but it's still a fish.  Another one is when the host tells us all about the best lure to use in these conditions, in this place, etc. He shows how to tie it on, what tackle to use to fish that particular lure, then when you see him landing fish the lure in the fish's mouth is absolutely nothing like what he just told us about. I don't remember which show it was, but after all the hype about a lure, I never saw the host catch a fish on it the rest of the show.  One more pet peeve. The host catches a fish, it's not very big, but it's a "quality" fish. What the heck is that? Super User A-Jay Posted June 29, 2013 Super User Posted June 29, 2013 For me, it revolves around shows that target smallmouth bass.   Every notice that these shows are almost always filmed during the spawn. When the fish are shallow enough where the anglers are sight fishing for them. That's all well and good, and makes for entertaining TV, but I'd appreciate a show where "The Host" actually targets these fish when they are Not at their most vulnerable. A show dedicated to finding these fish when they are Not in 10 feet of water and defending the nest / territory. This I would embrace.    A-Jay 1 Quote
tatertester Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 To me Charlie Moore and Zona should take a long vacation together so they could throw down on each other, fighting over who is the biggest showboater and bonehead!!!!!......The best TV fishing show is ,hands down, the Lindners.....They fish for both largemouth and smallmouth in both lakes and rivers, explain techniques well , great photography, just good entertaining ,educational watching.....Plus , just good downhome, approachable guys. 0119 Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 To me fishing shows are no longer for education. Forums and youtube have taken the place of shows, dvd's and especially magazines which seem to be made poorer every month. I look for shows who have a host I enjoy or go to a location I'm interested in seeing. I now watch only the English fishing shows on WFN and Lunkerville, stuff that makes me feel good. DelfiBoyz_One_and_Only Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 My pet peeve is are hunting shows centered around a food plot! Be it bear, deer, hogs, etc. Anyone can train a critter to come to a food source. The real hunt is all natural, you, your weapon of choice, and the natural elements/environment. Hunting a farm to help a farmers harvest is good to do but not show worthy. Walking into a Forrest finding deer signs and taking game is where it's at. Jay Quote
bassh8er Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 I understand the business end of it, but if they are going to hawk me a product, at least add some educational or informative value to it. The Lindners push certain products during their show, but I feel I learned a new technique or approach after watching an episode.  The guy on Fishing Univeristy also pushes his products, but all I have after watching his show is a headache, with nothing learned.   Couldn't agree more about Fishing University, and they do not even hide the fact that the show is a 1/2 hour commercial for whatever lure they're using that day; because they only use 1 lure.  They were using one of the Little John cranks from Spro the other day, and John Crews was fishing with him.  They both threw the same lure right behind each other? Really? I'd think the guy in the back of the boat would throw something different if they really wanted to find a pattern and catch as many fish as possible. I agree with 2/3 of that. I'm a huge Boston sports fan and cannot even bear to watch Charlie Moore. Drives me nuts. Not sure why he even has a show, but apparently a lot people must really like him. I actually like Zona. He reminds me of going out fishing with an excited buddy and he's always humble about his skills while out on the water. The Linders seem to always fish public waters and show you just how they're catching them so you can too. Gotta respect that. Quote

That's the only alternate name I rally like, unless it's a huge fish, in which case hog is acceptable. I do agree on the whole small, but quality fish thing, unless you're talking about a smallmouth or an exceptionally pretty bass. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 I don't watch bass shows on tv, dragging a fish across the water is not my idea of fishing, I'm certainly not going to watch it. Not really a pet peeve just some additional viewing I'd like to see. Â I do watch some saltwater shows, most of them are in waters that are not like what I have in my area. Â They seem to always be fishing with bait all over the place and the fish are crashing them, believe me it doesn't always happen that way. Â I'd like to see more shows where they highlight surfcasting or fly fishing from the beach Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 I can't stand the way they edit out all the fishing mishaps and problems that occur while fishing. They make everything look like all you have to do is drop your bait in the water and you will catch fish. Just once I would like to see someone hang up or have a reel break on them. FrogFreak Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 My pet peeve is when I'm just sitting there enjoying a show and then I realize this guy gets to do this for a living and I have to go to work and sit in an office all day....... 1 Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I timed a show that will remain annonymous the other day for content. The 30 minute show had 9 minutes af actual substance related to fishing. This is common for the series. I love my DVR. Fast forward through the fluff. Quote
stkbassn Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 It's that sound on FLW outdoors when the angler hooks a fish, the one they play, you know what I'm talking about...not sure how to describe it...however, it plays in my head every time I hook a fish!! annoying! LOL 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 2, 2013 Super User Posted July 2, 2013 Â LOL ... Boy do I have a little story for you! Â If you saw the river monsters episode in the Ukraine he was searching for the river monster of the Ukraine. Â My wife has never seen the show but decided to watch it with me because she is from Kiev in the Ukraine. Â In Jeremy Wade fashion he dramatically finds someone who is describing the "monster". Â The native called it the "Psalm" or something like that. Â My wife yells at the screen "Oh for freakin' sake ... its a stupid catfish". Â By the end of the show he catches a catfish. Â She also mentioned that according to Jeremy Wade the "Psalm" weighed something like 200 -300 pounds when the native actually said something like 100 - 200. Â Fun to watch the show with a native. Â Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 2, 2013 Super User Posted July 2, 2013 I watch the big commercial fishing shows for entertainment more than to learn more now than I ever did. Â Early on I felt like I was learning by listening to what they were saying. Â I realized I needed to pay attention to what they were doing, how they were doing it and where they actually are. Â I think it was one of Gene's videos which said the best way to watch those shows is to put it on mute. Â I never felt so validated about my opinion on fishing shows. Â Sometimes what they say has to be seriously adjusted to meet your needs. Â For example ... When they refer to springtime fishing in the south it's generally a different world up here in the north. Â Their April spring is more like June/July here if we are lucky. Â Another example is summertime fishing when the water get's well above 90. Â I don't think the waters up north ever get that not. Â At least I haven't seen it yet. Â The only pet peeve I have is one which is just a 30 minute commercial that someone mentioned. Â But only those which show hookset after hookset, doesn't explain what they are doing or show how they are doing it. Â I avoid those like the plague. Quote
CPBassFishing Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I hate when the guy fishing holds up a 2 pounder at full arm's length, making it look twice the size. Dave mercer is particularly guilty of this. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 In-Fisherman, linders show good info.  I guess I can watch zonas show as he does remind me of a buddy and is a bit humble-   The rest are garbage. The worst are tournament shows, hooksets of 2lb fish- screaming and going on like children while on trophy waters. Never insight on tournament prep except for what gear they bring. Would love to hear more on other aspects of the tournament except for your sponsors.  Some of the tournament guys are okay but that seems to be a small portion.  For the most part though a lot of them (tournament guys) remind me of a box of macaroni and cheese; prepackaged, corporate with a distinct "cheesy" flavor.    Edit(I do love smaller programs only on DVD/etc.- Trout eaters, etc. Quote
