As much as I love outdoor television, I have my fair share of pet peeves. number two on the list, is when a pro dismisses an impressive fish as small.  Perhaps it is because I'm in Northern IL, and up here bass grow slow, maybe it's due to me fishing from the bank, but when I catch a 2 pounder from shore i'm more than satisfied, a three pounder means I'm ecstatic, and a 4 pounder makes my heart skip a beat. I certainly do not however dismiss a fiesty lil uno pounder as a nuisance. My number one, and perhaps more justified pet peeve, is when somebody makes a bad/ lame shot a celebrates.  for example watching whitetail freaks yesterady, the chick gut shot a buck and proceeded to squeal, celebrate and preach of her good shot. This is nearly as bad as some "pro," who was knife hunting boars; the dogs grounded him, and the guides took his legs and immobilized the boar, then said pro proceeded to stab the boar in the lung and talk about how hard this quest was.  So come on my fellow outdoorsman, delve into your inner david e. petzal curmudgeon, and vent your complaints and pet peeves.

I don't have many as the shows are "their shows" and not mine, BUT, it really irks me when a TV host has his own show, but fishes with another species guide and tells them what to do.  I undertand you are a guide and a good fisherman, but the guy you are fishing with does this every day.  Listen to them!

My pet peeve is actually the opposite of this.  I hate when a host claims, "This is a Big One!," only to have it be a 2 pounder.  I know they need to build the drama of a show, but for some reason it annoys me when they call out these big fish they just hooked when it turns out to be just average at best.

This is me Second Pet Peeve (the first I mentioned in the post above)

They have to have sponsors in order to have a show. Of course they are going to mention/display whatever they are using to help out the sponsor! It is supposed to be entertainment. Try not to read into it so much!

I can't stand it when one of the hunting celebs gutshoots a deer, then he/she talks about the awesome shot they just put on it.

Along the same lines,  they are usually more concerned with making sure the shot was caught on film rather than making sure it was a clean, ethical kill.

I understand the business end of it, but if they are going to hawk me a product, at least add some educational or informative value to it.  The Lindners push certain products during their show, but I feel I learned a new technique or approach after watching an episode.  The guy on Fishing Univeristy also pushes his products, but all I have after watching his show is a headache, with nothing learned.

So don't watch it! But I'm sure if you had your own show, The Lucky Craft Man Fishing Extravaganza, if a sponsor with deep pockets wanted you to showcase their product, you would, too, whether or not anyone learned anything from it. No offense, really. But most outdoor shows are made to sell, sell, sell! If you really want to LEARN, you come to this site or Bassresource YouTube pages. Once again, not trying to be negative, just real. I watch the same shows, but I don't expect to walk away feeling like a better angler. It just better than 95% of the other crap on TV.

i am not a hunter but for some reason i like hunting shows.  i can't stand when i see people hunting black bear over bait and they say we just have to wait for them to get their head out to get a clean shot.  then they go crazy like they did something special.....might as well go hunt in a zoo or on s game reserve where they drive till they get close enough to shoot and even use the vehicle as a gun stand.

Hmmm...The Lucky Craft Man Fishing Extravaganza...I like that. Do you know of any sponsors with deep pockets will to start a show like that? The premise will be a fisherman (who admittedly sucks), but goes to locations that harbor trophy fish, hire a guide to put me on these fish, and then I will look decent (though, I think this concept has been used already).

As far as not watching shows like the one I mentioned, I don't.

Not to brown nose him any further (he gets that enough), but this is truly what sets Gene abover and beyond the rest. I aim to watch fishing shows to learn techniques and guys like Gene tell you how to use the technique instead of what equipment to do the technique with. It's fine if a guy says "I am dropshotting with X bait, X reel and X rod" as long as he also says WHY he made those choices and as long as those reasons aren't "BECAUSE THIS BRAND AND THIS BRAND ONLY IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST (because they paid me to say that)".

ExtremeAnglerTV is significantly bad at this, but fun to watch. "I'm using a St. Croix rod for this frog technique today because St. Croix rods are the best rods money can buy" is nearly verbatim what he says every episode.

I enjoy when angler's fish large, well known lakes, or at least natural areas. It annoys me when Bill Dance's episode is just a 30 minute lure showcase on a pellet fed pond. Either way i still watch it haha.

Just responding to a comment. That's all. I agree that most outdoor shows are totally rigged and edited, but it's still fun to watch.

MY FISRT HOT THREAD, altuogh I also hate "thinly veiled commercial," if it teaches me something I'm happy.  If it weren't for outdoor TV, I never would've learned of GULP, Rapala, and KVD cranks, which altogether admittedly catch most of my fish, but i learned to use them from the shows where they were advertised.  Thank your lucky stars for bassresource, where you can learn and read reviews of products hawked at you on TV. :blob9:

I also think most top anglers like a bait before they are sponsored by them and once they get to be big time they then are more involved in the R & D side of the equation.  So yes they get paid but i would venture a guess it isn't as much as we would like to think.

Now the one show i cannot stand because of all the brand dropping is Roland Martin.  Every fish he catches he has to go through his whole set up and name brands for everything he is using.  Not to mention he looks like he is nascar with all his logos every where.

I can't stand the shows where the angler doesn't talk about the technique they are using and why they are using it or other such considerations. Then there is 5 minutes of fishing and 5 minutes of the same d**n commercials advertising the products they've already been selling half of the show.

That's a 50/50 split of commercials vs. programming....and then half of the programming is an advertisement too.

My biggest pet peeve when watching a fishing show is seeing a fish feeder in the immediate background on the 10 acre pond they're fishing. To be more direct it pains me to see fishing shows shot on small private waters.

I also cant stand the hog hunts that involve dogs and a knife. It would be much more impressive if you could take the hog down by yourself and kill it with a knife. I dont really understand why one would enjoy that either though. Im sure its a rush of adrenaline but then again it just doesnt seem ethical to me. I enjoy hunting and all that but something about terriffying an animal and then stabbing it until it dies just seems a little crazy.

I disagree, I would love to knife hunt sounds rather primal, but one where guides practically string the animal up before you even kill it, yyyeeaahhh no. There is no sport in that

Don't usually see it too much in the actual fishing shows but in some of the shows like "River Monsters" or "Top Hooker" I'm not sure why they do it but they'll add the old school clicking noise in when someone is reeling in, no matter that very few reels anymore make any kind of noise when you reel them in. I know it's a minor thing but it bugs me every time I hear it on one of those shows.

That sound is added post processing? I always wondered why Jeremy Wade's reels did that. That's pretty silly to do.

My pet peeves are:

1- when the fishing tips are useless cause the host can't think if anything (this only happens on a few shows)

2- when the host doesn't know what he's doing and he doesn't catch a lot/doesn't teach me anything (Like Charlie Moore:no offense- that show is boring most of the time)

My favorite fishing shows are Zona's AFS, FLW outdoors, bass masters, big bass battle, scottmartin challenge, and major league fishing.
