Mr_Scrogg Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Im learning Cranks, among other things. One thing Ive found that gives me confidence is catching fish on cranks. (I know, I know... Rocket Science huh?) But, I do it at small neighborhood ponds that are loaded with dinks. Yes they would probably hit a bare hook, but it also lets me feel what a strike is, practice hooksets, learn how to toss them around cover. I took a RC Squarebill this morning and landed 15 or so in a about 1.5 hrs. Not saying Im ready to take them and crank the bigger lakes to death, but Im a little more comfortable with them now. Try it out! Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted June 28, 2013 Super User Posted June 28, 2013 IMO you get confidence any way you can! I am "stuck" on the bank most of the time and it's where I do all of my practice for tournament fishing. The key is to practice with a purpose if you do decide to practice a technique. I am just beginning to work with Square Bills too. I focus on being able to feel the bait grinding against the bottom. Once I felt that consistently I began varying retrieves. For example when I hit something hard pause for a moment and begin the retrieve OR grinded it back as fast as I can. Needless to say I began by catching white perch more than bass. I then began attracting larger and larger bass and was rewarded with a pair 3+ lb smallies the other day working the crank. My confidence grew with each catch. I posted about issues I had with the crank and with some fine tuning of the bait the hook percentage also went up. Keep going ... get your confidence any way you can. It will pay off! Quote

Try it out! This is how I practiced at a pond filled with 1lb bass. I practiced my drop shot technique, senko/stick-o wacky rigging..and next I will be doing the same with cranks. (I don't have much experience with them). It really helps gain confidence to feel how a strike feels with the different presentations. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted June 28, 2013 Super User Posted June 28, 2013 My best fishing has been from the shore at places I have learned threw the years on how to fish them. One problem there is no topo maps on the smaller places. We were digging holes in the ice using a line and a saltwater lure to map them out. There is a much safer way now using a portable fish finder that we cast out. Enough said. Anytime we can practice with lure on any fish that's a good thing. I like to stop and test different new lures and presentations. Example my first try using senkos I pulled three 3lb. bass out of the same spot. All I thought is we have a Winner with this plastic. I see big bass in all these smaller places that are either river fed or spring fed. Quote
