zildjian Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Hey guys, What do you prefer for a Carolina rig rod.. 7'3" - 7'6" MH or Heavy ? I'm not going to be throwing anything under 1/2oz. I was looking at duckett micro guide series and the dobyns champion series. Having a hard time between the two powers.. Also what tip is appropriate for this technique fast? Thanks, -Zildjian Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 28, 2013 Super User Posted June 28, 2013 7'6'' MH/F or H/F. Make sure you stay within your rod weight limits. That will determine the MH or H. I know a couple guys who like the ducketts but a ton of guys(here on BR) who like the dobyns. You will get a myriad of opinions here. Just wait! Jeff Quote
smr913 Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I'm using a heavy power, fast action 7'3" for split duty on Carolina rigs and Football jigs. Mine is a Powell Max, but I don't think you can go wrong with a Dobyns Champion from all the great things I have read about them. Quote
Arv Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I like my 7'2 H/XF Phenix M1. Its not a dedicated C rig rod though. If I was to get one just for C rigging I would opt for a longer rod like the 7'6 you mentioned. Like Jeff said, just make sure you stay in your weight range. As far as rods go, I don't think you could go wrong with either, but I would lean towards the Champion if its in your price range. 1 Quote
zildjian Posted June 28, 2013 Author Posted June 28, 2013 Thanks guys, I'm a huge dobyns fan, just about all my rods are dobyns champions with a couple champion extremes. I just wasn't sure which power to go with for this technique. I don't want to regret going with to much of a stiff rod with the heavy power action. but this rod is going to be 1/2oz plus for fishing offshore humps and what not. But do I go with a MH that's a little more forgiving? I absolutely want between a 7'3" - 7'6" Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 28, 2013 Super User Posted June 28, 2013 If you want the Dobyns Champion, I would suggest the 764. It is rated 1/4- 1 1/2 oz. The 763 would work too, but only goes up to 1 oz. I would stick with the heavier rod. JMO Jeff Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Anything you would throw a swimbait of similar weight on will work well. 1 Quote
zildjian Posted June 28, 2013 Author Posted June 28, 2013 Ah Jeff you got me thinking now... I'm leaning more towards the 764c because of the weights ill be mostly throwing. As for line you guys like fluorocarbon with mono leader? Or fluorocarbon with lighter lb fluorocarbon leader? And obviously for reel you'll want something that can pick up that slack quick. Any line recommendations as well? I like Sunline FC Sniper fluorocarbon a lot, but that's just me. Quote
zildjian Posted June 30, 2013 Author Posted June 30, 2013 caught these boys carolina rigging for the first time yesterday 3lbs & 2lbs 4oz 1 Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 Nice! What was your set-up? Rod,reel, line, weight and bait? Jeff Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted July 1, 2013 Super User Posted July 1, 2013 if you are not going under 1/2oz, then stay with the 4 power dobyns. 764 would be ideal in the champion line. 1 Quote
zildjian Posted July 1, 2013 Author Posted July 1, 2013 Nice! What was your set-up? Rod,reel, line, weight and bait? Jeff funny thing with that... is that i was to eager to try out the carolina rig, so used a rod and reel combo that doesn't get used. 6'9" MH Powell Endurance with Abu Garcia Skeet Reese Revo that i believe i had 14lb mono spooled on it. i added 1/2oz tungsten bullet weight, glass bead, barrel swivel, 2 1/2 foot 14lb BPS leader with Trokar 3/0 ewg hook and Zoom Trick worm. they crushed it... purchasing this week... Rod: Dobyns 764c 7'6" Heavy power, with Fast tip Reel: Shimano Curado 201E7 or Lews Tournament Pro Speed Spool 7.1:1 Line: Sunline FC Sniper 16lb Fluorocarbon Quote
zildjian Posted July 1, 2013 Author Posted July 1, 2013 what bead sizes and barrel swivels sizes do you guys recommend? 6mm, 8mm 10mm?? i see lots of people actually use two beads, both different sizes, or one brass ticker instead. i think i'm going to order a few to try out. but wasn't sure what sizes to grab.. any thoughts? Quote
motodmast Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 i use a 8mm red bead. 2 of them.they not only protect the knot form the weight, but also bang together making noise and "supposedly' attract more fish 1 Quote
Grantman83 Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I double up my DX Mike Long Jig rod as a Carolina rig rod. Heavy action (But more medium heavy). It has the action, length and sensitivity needed for deep water stuff. High speed reel and 17lb Fluoro. I don't really focus on the leader specifically because I use extra fluoro from spools which don't have enough line on them to put on a reel. Great way to use high pound test fluoro. Weight is dependent on wind and depth since I always want to maintain bottom contact. Usually 3/4 oz. Quote
DTack Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 If you haven't purchased yet, may also consider the Dobyns champion 804c, it was designed for Carolina rigs, and the little extra length gives you a good increase in line pickup on the hook set! Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 3, 2013 Super User Posted July 3, 2013 Anything you would throw a swimbait of similar weight on will work well. This. I don't throw Carolina rigs much, but when I do, it's with my frog/swimjig/small swimbait rod. a 7'1" St Croix MH/F Rage..........not one of the rods you asked about, but just to give you an example. Virtuoso Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I like a heavier rod. My 7'3'' NRX 873crr is excellent for the application. Its also the most powerful rod in the NRX lineup IMHO. Quote
zildjian Posted July 3, 2013 Author Posted July 3, 2013 Thanks for the comments guys! just purchased the Dobyns 764c and Lews TPSS 7.1:1 thanks again everyone Quote
