I'm looking for a hat that offers more protection from the sun than a baseball cap, but isn't too hot to wear. What type of hat do you guys wear while fishing, and where di you buy it? Thanks.

Simms Sunshield Hat - I'll admit right off that this hat is a bit of a fashion risk and might be considered goofy by some, but it kept me from burning to a crisp in Mexico this spring where the day time temps were fairly extreme.

I wear a hat with the "curtain" that wraps around the sides and back of your head.  I also wear a buff.  White is the best color.  it reflects a lot of the radiant heat from the sun.

I'm not going to you it doesn't get warm, sometimes very warm, but it's better than trying to sleep at night with your face on fire.  But the main reason is not for comfort.  It's to protect against skin cancer.  I only use sunblock on my nose, and chap stick on my lips.  Oh, I also wear Dr. Shade gloves, and long sleeve shirts/jerseys.

The Tilley hat is a high end item, very good if the weather isn't too hot or humid. Sundays Afternoon brand is an excellent sun shade SPF 30 rated and very light weight,. I own both hats and usually choose the Sundays Days full shade hat in navy blue with flat black under the bill. The white with black is another good color combo, except I just can't seem to keep a white clean very long when fishing.

I will not go out in the sun without sunscreen on my face and arms and hands because I hate to wear gloves and take off my hate when running the boat at higher speeds.

I wear a ball  cap until summer hits, then I wear the boonie hat I wore over in Iraq.

My girlfriend got me a boonie style fishing hat from Dillards I believe.  It has mesh in the inside which is supposed to keep your head cool as well.

Besides the hat with full Sun coverage what about the bugs with all the rain we been having. My buddy wears a fabric softener towel in the back of his hat sticking out. I'm ready to try anything just walking outside I'm on the menu. What do you guys and gals do? I need a good hat too.

Here's the hat shown in my Avatar (along with a sweatband that I was also wearing.)  The straps irritated me, so I cut them off.  The mesh helps to keep you cool.  If it gets too hot I dip the hat into the lake and then put it back on.  I've had it about five years and it's still going strong.  You can find them cheaper at Academy.

My summer hat of choice is the Outdoor Research Sombriolet Sun hat.  It is a typical wide brimmed tilley like hat that is super light weight, not as expensive, washable, and cool while wearing it.  I highly recommend this hat.

Got me one of these at BPS...like it enough to wear it often, but sometimes the wind drives me nuts as the brim will flip up all the time. But it's super cool to wear (not cool as in The Fonz).

Otherwise I'll wear a ball cap style hat.

I wear a boonie that allows the sides to button to the top, as seen in my avatar. Got it for $12 at Walmart last year. Doesn't get too warm, and the all around brim keeps the sun off my face and neck most of the time.

I just searched fishing hats and www.amazon.com came up. They have every hat you can think of. Even some brands mentioned here.

Tilley hat for sure.  Expensive but it is worth the price.  Made with SPF material and the mesh rim at the crown helps prevent overheating if you live down here in the deep south.  I've always hated wearing hats but for 3 years my Dr. kept telling me get a Tilley as she was cutting and freezing chunks off my head, neck and throat.  Its the only hat I've ever worn that I forget I'm wearing.

Once the sun gets too hot for my cap, I put on a wide brim straw hat.  It lets the air through and is really keeps your head cool.

I have a north face solar armor hat in light kaki color. Has mesh venting along the sides, a chin strap for when I am heading out to my spot in the boat and spf protection. I love it. I even started wearing it to kids soccer games, and took it to Disney. Well worth the $25 or so I spent on it.

I've been using the Glacier Glove hat for awhile now and I really like it.
