Thatbasstardbrent Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 When a company is very low on the popularity scale will they be more willing to sponsorship requests? And if they dont even any pro staff? Quote
kylek Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 First off ask yourself this.. What can you do for the company? I see in your profile that you are really young still. I doubt at your age you can offer the company enough for them to sponsor you. How do you plan on promoting this company? Facebook, local tourneys and your buddies won't be enough to get you sponsored. Get good grades in school and get into a good rcollege with a fishing team. Win some tourneys at that level will get you noticed. Keep it up and you may get you a sponsor. Good luck! 1 Quote

I am currently doing pre sponsorship work for creme lures. It does actually keep some attention on me and lets them trust me. I agreed to help for free until i was able to go to tournaments and manage money etc. And I'm taking a lot of business and financial classes. Quote
Thatbasstardbrent Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 Also, could you point me to some colleges with fishing teams? Im 15 so i have to prepare. Quote
kylek Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Also, could you point me to some colleges with fishing teams? Im 15 so i have to prepare. I can't really name any in your area. There is one in Missouri at the college I went to. They didn't have a fishing team while I was there. They are sponsored by Tightlines, which happens to be in their hometown. I would google some colleges in your area and see what they have to offer. Just worry about being a kid right now. Learn as much as you can from here and in books so you will be prepared when your time comes up. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 lots of threads on this topic. my advice would be put up some nice youtube vids in HD with good editing. at the very least you should have free soft plastics in no time 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 25, 2013 Super User Posted June 25, 2013 Why do you "need" sponsors? 1 Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 25, 2013 Super User Posted June 25, 2013 Also, could you point me to some colleges with fishing teams? Im 15 so i have to prepare. Your focus first should be your career (non-fishing)...second fishing. Figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life in case the professional fishing thing collapses. Because like any professional sport, the chances of making it are slim. Not saying you can't or won't but you need to build that in the equation. Getting into a college with a great fishing program is a bonus. Good luck with your journey. Quote
jhoffman Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 sponsorship at most levels below elites = second job, no paycheck, bait discount 2 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 27, 2013 Super User Posted June 27, 2013 First thing i would do is work on your grammar and writing. I know you are young and i also know this is an online forum but you will have to write resumes and cover letters etc...and if you write in the same manner as your question then you most likely will not get a second look. WIth all that being said, i wil ladd on to the get a career and keep focusing on your education. Also rad up on some of the stories of the elite anglers out there. I think you will be surprised to see how many were working their tails off with other jobs while competing just trying to make ends meet. Quote
Thatbasstardbrent Posted June 27, 2013 Author Posted June 27, 2013 Ya i know, my grammar is really bad in this question. Quote
etommy28 Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 as for colleges, there are about 400 now so they are all over the place. there are many in NY and at least a couple in jersey Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 6, 2013 Super User Posted July 6, 2013 Check this link for colleges that have fishing teams: http://www.collegiatebasschampionship.com/ I have no idea if Rutgers or Fairly Ridiculous have bass teams. I think they have a "Find Jimmy Hoffa's Body" team which I am sure you can join. Having sponsors is great but you have to do something for them like winning a few teenage tournaments. Or at least fish some of the teenage tournaments. And not fall out of the boat or get into trouble during the tournament. You need to subscribe to Bassmasters Magazine and FLW Magazine via joining both organizations plus subscribe to Bass Times which covers teenage bass fishing tournaments. Look up Bass Times on the Internet and get your subscription today. May I suggest using you favorite search engine and find all of the articles about college bass fishing that you can along with the "junior bass" tournaments where teenagers are allowed to fish? And you need your parents' support as it is time consuming and costly to travel down to Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, etc. to fish the junior circuit. NEVER LOSE YOUR DREAM OF GETTING SPONSORS AND BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL BASS FISHERMAN. Never, never, never. Plan for your future; ask the colleges you are interested in attending about their bass fishing clubs; note the waters around the school and ask what waters they fish and if you need a boat; and realize that whey you get to high school and college you will have to put girls ahead of fishing. Happens to all of us. Girls, that is. But never, never, never give up your dream. Get on the computer and search YouTube and the B.A.S.S. and FLW web sites for junior bass fishing and read, read and read about the kids and the tournaments. Contact some of the guys who did well in the tournament and speak with them on the phone. Many will gladly tell you their stories and how they got into bass fishing and did so well in the tournaments. In other words, do your research. And when you start to date have a checklist to 1) remember to look at their mothers as that is what they will look like after a bunch of kids; and 2) find out if her daddy has a Ranger with two power poles and a Mercury 250 four-stroke. Now please go out and look for Jimmy Hoffa's body. Thanks. P.S. Don't forget about that Ranger!!! 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 6, 2013 Super User Posted July 6, 2013 And Brent, any company - new or established - may want to sponsor you if they believe they will have a good return on their investment. You can get sponsors in and out of the fishing industry. Ever see the movie The Bad News Bears? They got a bail bonds place to sponsor them. Always ask about getting permission to put a company's name and logo on your tournament shirt. You may only get a small discount on their products but the goal is to have as many names on your shirt as possible. Remember, all the sponsors can say is "no" and you have been told no before. And don't forget that Ranger when you start to date. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 6, 2013 Super User Posted July 6, 2013 Brent, I forgot to ask you to do something about the junior bass fishing events in New Jersey: Contact your New Jersey B.A.S.S. and FLW Federations as they do the junior tournaments. How could I forget that? The Virginia federations are always crying for guys with boats to take the little heathens out fishing. You can search for the New Jersey Federations for both organizations and contact them for the details or go to each Federation's web page and see who to contact in the state. You may be able to fish the junior tournaments in Jersey or close by in between trying to find Jimmy Hoffa's body. Good luck and let us know what you find out by adding to this post next week. And don' forget about your girlfriend's dad's Ranger. Quote
born2fish94 Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 When a company is very low on the popularity scale will they be more willing to sponsorship requests? And if they dont even any pro staff? I'm a younger guy myself at 19 and i thought i would give you some advice. I've been fishing my life and tournament fishing for 3 years. i didn't have my first sponsor until about 8 months ago since then i now have seven. Getting sponsors can really help out alot but like others have said all you get is a discount in return for doing alot of work. But you must start out small then work your way to getting a big sponsorship. The best way to do it as a fisherman that doesn't get national recognition like most of us is through social media. Start a youtube channel, Start a facebook page. You would be amazed at what it will do for you. I've done it and it has helped me tremendously. I have had companies tell me that they will not take a pro-staff member unless they can produce videos. Now that i fish BFL's i get a little more recognition. One thing i will tell you is like others have said concentrate on school first! All the way until my senior year i didnt do great at school because the only thing i did was play sports, fish, and chase girls. I had the brains just not the drive. My senior year i had to bust my butt and get straight A's just to get into AUM to fish. So school is so important man! hope this helped! Keep working! you'll get there! Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 19, 2013 Super User Posted August 19, 2013 Born, is that Awbunn University in Montgomery? As you know, Awbunn has an outstanding bass fishing club. Almost as good as LSU. Get good grades; transfer to The Plains; get that degree; get a great career; start fishing again; rise up the ladder of fishing success; get married; forget fishing; have kids; then get back into fishing. That is just the way it is for all of us. All the best for continued success. Please let us know when you are featured or mentioned in Bass Times. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 19, 2013 Super User Posted August 19, 2013 Brent, strap on your strap and hit the gym. You need some muscles on those bones. Tournament fishing is tough and you need to be in good physical shape. Then, watch how the NASCAR guys speak and write and follow their example. Quote

pbizzle Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 It's just like any other sport where the chance of you going pro aren't very high. I'm not trying to be discouraging because I to would love to be a professional angler and I'm going to try as hard as possible to be one, but for now I have to be realistic and realize that education should come first. Look at KVD, Ike, or any other major angler. They're all well educated. You can tell because of how they talk. They're very persuasive with out being pushy because of their vocabulary, grammar, and how they speak. This is the same for every career. The well educated will always be on top. 1 Quote
