alces1954 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Hello guys and girls, new to the site. Been fishing in and around boca/miami for the past year with a guide for peacocks and LM. My mother just retired and moved there so I can now leave a boat down there. Any suggestions on size or hull material? Was planing on a full size fiberglass. Are there any canals that are too small for this size boat? Also are there really peacocks that far north, I was under the impression miami and south. Thanks! Elliot Quote
Diggy Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 There are peas up as far as Palm Beach. The heaviest population is in South West Broward county and even greater in Miami areas. Someone I know has a spot in Boca for peas but I have no Idea if its east or west, he did say he caught a ton of them with a client. Someone should be able to help you the boat answer, tons of boaters on here. I am a bank fisherman so I have no idea other than john boats, kayaks and canoes. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 24, 2013 Super User Posted June 24, 2013 One advantage to a jon boat or kayak is access to canals, they can be slid down the bank pretty easy, no need for a ramp. We had peas all over the place in Palm Beach County until the freeze, not as many around but some are being caught. I know places in Boca that should hold them, I have caught peas in Delray this year. Quote
shallow thinker Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 An aluminum jon boat is all you need to fish the canals. There are good ramps in most major systems plus you've got Lox refuge and the canals & flats out west along US27. That said, a fiberglass bass boat or a flats boat gives you a more comfortable ride and more range to fish Lake Okeechobee or inshore saltwater. I started in a 14 jon... then a 15 foot boston whaler and now a 17' flats boat. Each had its application and limitations. Quote
alces1954 Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Thanks for the input. I think Im gonna go with a larger boat because I do want to fish Lake O. Are there peacocks in Lox or just the canals? Quote

Looking at those two peacocks.....I know exactly where you were and who you chartered. There is only one guide who can produce those. I know that was a blast! You have fished the best area so anything else will be the minor leagues. 1 Quote
alces1954 Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 I would agree, that particular water is amazing as is the guide who took me there. We caught nice ones all 4 times we went this year. One time was with a friend who had never fished before, hes hooked now. We have had a blast every time we went out with RG...will continue to hire him. I just want something to play around with in local waters on my own when I am down in Boca for a short visit. Where do you guide?
