countrybumpkin Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 hey guys and gals, how is everyone doing today?. I have a question I'm looking at getting a new rod and reel the type of fishing ill be doing is from the bank it has a lot of Lilly pads and grass and what knot. the set up i'm looking at is the Abu Garcia Revo Toro Winch Casting Reel and the duckett exta heavy action rod would this be a good set up. I will be fishing soft plastic's , jigs, frogs. here are the links to both of them http://duckettfishing.com/product.php?productid=16208&cat=263&page=1 or this rod http://duckettfishing.com/product.php?productid=16143&cat=3&page=1 http://www.basspro.com/Abu-Garcia-Revo-Toro-Winch-Casting-Reel/product/10216849/ Quote
Super User Marty Posted June 23, 2013 Super User Posted June 23, 2013 Obviously you're thinking about maximizing your chances to get that fish in through heavy vegetation and that rod appears to offer a very good chance. The other question to consider is whether that rod will efficiently cast the lures you plan to use. I don't know how think your vegetation is, but for what it's worth, I've pulled some good sized bass through heavy dense algae mats with 15# Power Pro on a spinning rod with medium power. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted June 24, 2013 Super User Posted June 24, 2013 That reel is a beast. I have one and wouldn't use it for "regular" bass fishing applications. I use mine for throwing big heavy swimbaits. It's a large, heavy duty reel. I would go with a regular Revo of your choice. They are robust enough to handle heavy cover applications and are much lighter than the Toro's. Quote
harmon Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 If you like it and it works for you, then it is a good set-up. 1 Quote
countrybumpkin Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 thanks for replying the reason I want to get this set up, Is most of my fishing will be from the bank and a lot of the places I fish the areas have bad heavy cover so I want to be able to pull them out of the weed cover, plus a couple of the areas are on docks at public areas that its 5 feet above the water plus the rails to. what I really want it for is flipping and pitching, and soft baits , jigs , some spinner baits. OhioBassNewcomer Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Can't go wrong with any Revo. I like low profile baitcatsers and I love my Revo S. Quote
HuskyKMA Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 The Toro reels are more meant for larger species, like salmon and steelhead in my part of the world. You don't need that beefy reel for any bass. Also you're going to want a much fast gear ratio than the 4.6:1 on the Toro Winch for the type of fishing you described with jigs and soft plastics. Take a look at a Abu Revo SX or STX with a 7.1:1 or 8.0:1 gear ratio, I think you'll be much happier with that. Quote
Arv Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I'd prefer a higher gear ratio but thats just me. Other than that I think you picked out good equipment. Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 It its what you like, get it and enjoy catching some bass. Quote
