airborne_angler Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I'm wanting to possibly throw a 3 wire Yum Flash Mob Jr in the future.I'm looking at putting a Hollow Belly Swimbait with1/8oz weighted swimbait hooks on the outer arms and a swimbait with a 1/4oz internal weight with the hook snipped off on the center arm (Arizona only allows 2 hooks on an A Rig. ) Is there a bare minimium gear ratio or other feature I should have on a reel to throw this rig.O plan on throwing it on a 7' Falcon heavy action Carolina Lizard Dragger I Rod. Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 23, 2013 Super User Posted June 23, 2013 If I had a spare $250 + shipping I'd have a Shimano Curado 300E or an EJ. One is 6.4 to 1 and the other is 6.9 to 1. That isn't an option right now, so I'm using an older Calcutta (3 BB model). I believe that the gear ratio is 5-1. It throws 65 lb braid great. I think that gear ratio doesn't matter much, because basically you are always trying to slow roll it and tick the tops of whatever cover is out there. I'm comfortable using a 5-1 reel for this because, basically most of my reels are 5-1. I think that you should use whatever you are comfortable with and can get the best distance out of. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I don't throw a rigs much but I use a Cardiff 200. If I used it more I would probably get a Calcutta 300. Quote
Diggy Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 You could probably use any reel you own, your setup you want to throw isnt that heavy in all honesty. I threw a heavier a rig with a 7 to 1 PQ and had no problems, it didnt create much torque. 5 or 6 may probably be more ideal due to speed... Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I use a 301E myself and its great because its very powerful for a 6 ratio reel. If I were going to use a smaller size reel I think I'd want a 5 ratio, but this is really just a personal preference thing. As has already been pointed out you can use just about any reel you already have. I do believe though if you really like throwing the rig you'll want to invest in a combo better suited to the technique. Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I use a Lewis Super duty and a Abu 5500. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 24, 2013 Global Moderator Posted June 24, 2013 The rig you're wanting to fish isn't a big rig at all. I use a Curado 300E or a Calcutta 400B for the really big stuff but you'd be fine with most bass reels. I'd probably opt for something in the 6.2 ratio range. Something like a 5600 or 5500 round Abu or a Cardiff 200 would suit you just fine and wouldn't break the bank. An older 200 Curado or Cardiff would do the job just fine also. Quote
