MIbassin Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Hey guys! I just had a quick question: Most lakes i fish have really nice looking shorelines with logs and weeds, and in some lakes there are big grass "islands" that stick up out of the water, would you first see if the fish are active by throwing a buzz bait or would you throw a pop-r first and slowly pop it bass the shoreline/islands? dday07 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 From what you described and if those 2 choices i'd go buzzbait...i rarely use poppers anymore unless water dead calm in more open water. Quote
basshole8190 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Popping frog around grass and weeds sticking out of the water and buzz bait over submerged grass. Quote
Super User Marty Posted June 22, 2013 Super User Posted June 22, 2013 As a general rule, I'd start with the faster-moving lure because if the fish happen to be active you'll catch more. If they're not active then you switch to slower lures. 1 Quote
200racing Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 hollow body frog or buzz bait. with a weightless white, Merthiolate, or junebug trick worm for a follow up Quote
Stratos92 Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I usually start with a buzzbait then throw a pop-r or a zara spook. Quote
Thatbasstardbrent Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Go with a buzz bait. Popprs can do the job early in the morning. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted June 23, 2013 Super User Posted June 23, 2013 I throw a spook type lure first in the morning. Then it's shallow floating cranks. If I go deep it's a #3 mepps inline spinner. Or a rebel BIG crawfish crank. Quote

Sometimes they need something that sits in their face for awhile to get them to bite though and the popper does a great job of getting their attention and then sitting still where they can't ignore it. Robert Riley Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I'd start with a little jitterbug, you have the capability to pause, unlike a buzz bait. Then I'd follow up with a big dimpled bladed spinnerbait. Quote
