powerduster Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I decided to wade in my shorts to cover more water and about 30 min in I saw something large in the corner of my eye breaking the surface. I wasn't sure what I was thinking, but I freaked a little bit and ran back to shore the best I could. After that I was more curious than afraid and looked around. It turned out to be a large otter. It was big that at first I thought it was a seal. It was the very first time I saw one and never knew they lived in this state. Quote
0119 Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I got a crankbait hung up while fishing out of a buddies jon boat. As we got directly over it I could see the outline of a windshield and a roof. We were about 15 yards from the shoreline at a popular spot for the bucket brigade. I called the office and they sent the dive team and a wrecker. They pulled out a 1988 Oldsmobile. Turned out it was owned by a Asian male who didn't know what to do with it when he decided to return overseas. So he sunk it. Almost 3 years to the date at the same spot I got hung up again. Getting over the snag I could see a white roof! Made another call to the office and we pulled up a new golf cart. It had been stolen 3 nights before from a course about 2 miles away and sunk by kids. About a month ago we were fishing a man made canal that stretches for miles. We had cruised to the ramp to find a Florida Fish and Wildlife Officer waiting there to do a safety check. We didn't flash our badges and obliged him as he checked the boat and cooler. He then told me my license was expired and I had to point out it was only a month old. He then told us we had violated the "no speed zone". We asked him did he mean "no wake zone" since that's the term the state statute has always used. He said no and he didn't know what we meant. Nowhere on the canal system is there any Idle speed or no wake signs as required. I was starting to feel a little squirrely as he said he'd let us go, so I said to him, Say hello to your supervisor Lt. so and so (who I'd known for 30 years). He said I wasn't pronouncing his name right and threw my license at me. A week later I saw my old FWC friend and asked him about this officer. He told me he not only didn't know who the guy was but didn't even have a man of that ethnic race working in the district! Hmmmm Imposter? Only if he had stolen a brand new F150 pickup totally rigged and marked with stripes, lights and FWC state license plate. And what about the uniform and gun? 1 Quote
pbrussell Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 This year I had two hawks fighting each other about 100+ feet in the air. I watched them for a while, as they were really going at it with the screeching. I decided to get back to fishing and only minutes later I heard a giant splash only feet from my boat that scared me out of my skin. Turns out the hawks were fighting over a squirrel and that giant splash came from one of them dropping it. Dang thing almost landed in my boat. I don't want to imagine what a squirrel traveling around terminal velocity would do to my rig, much less my head. Another time I was fishing from shore with a buddy when he told me he had lost a lure the day before in the area I was fishing. A few casts later, I snagged some line which I brought in by hand. On the other end of the line was his lure... and a bass. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted June 27, 2013 Super User Posted June 27, 2013 Wow, I would have called it a day after that swim. I'm glad you finished off the day on a good note! Everytime I go to this pond I take Raid with me. If I forget the Raid I give the boat a full inspection before sliding it into the water. There are a lot of big field spiders at this place. I know they aren't poisonous but it's hard not to jump when you find one crawling on you. Quote
Curved Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I was fishing one day and this loon comes along under the water. I'm sitting there watching it go by about 5' underwater, and all of a sudden it does a fast u-turn and goes down further after something. I see it come up with a fish. I'm fishing with a crankbait right at that moment, but I hear my drag go off on my other rod. I had forgotten I had a live bluegill on it and the loon had just taken my bait. So I start wrapping the line around my hands and yank that gill right out of the loon's mouth underwater. Of course the loon starts chasing my gill and here I am frantically yanking line in as this loon is chasing this bluegill who is having one heck of a ride. I finally yank the fish out of the water and it gets stuck on something underneath the dock. Not that bluegill's day. After I got him untangled, the loon had swam off, and the poor fish was still alive so I decided he had earned his freedom. I chucked him back in and after recovering on his side for a while, he swam off. Quote
berwind19 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Couple stories to share.... First, I was about ten or so fishing with my grandfather and dad at night on Cherokee Lake in TN. I was so young and excited I didn't know or care what we were fishing for! LOL. Anyway, we pulled up to a rock ledge and my grandfather had an OLD pump Coleman lantern. I can remember him pumping the thing at least twenty times and we had light. He sat it on the rock ledge and the lamp caught fire! He grabbed it and heaved it over into the water and sploosh! Mini explosion. Well, fish started floating up to the top and we decided to high tail it out of there. Fished maybe ten minutes! Secondly, a good friend of mine and myself were scout fishing a lake in preparation for an upcoming tourney. We got to the far end of the lake and since it was his boat, I was in the back. We started fishing and I asked if I should be hearing running water? He said a little. I opened the battery compartments and we were taking on a massive amount of water! He pulled his line in and we headed for the dock. The boat was so heavy with water, I had to climb out on the bow to even be able to see where we were headed. He then informs me that he cant swim! We get to the dock, he jumps out to get his trailer. I spin around to get a running shot at the trailer and down goes the boat. Me, tackle and all! We got the boat out. We missed the tourney! Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted July 22, 2013 Super User Posted July 22, 2013 A couple of times fishing at Truman Lake (which is kinda close to Whitman AFB) I had a stealth bomber go overhead. Those are cool planes. It is amazing how small they look coming at you, how large they are when they are directly overhead and then what a small profile they have when they are flying away. Quote
Preytorien Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 About 10 years ago I had just gotten my first baitcaster. Nothing expensive and I had 15lb mono on it. Went to a large reservoir and was "fishing" with it off of some docks in about 20 feet of water, it was more practicing than fishing. I decided to put a 1oz spinnerbait on it and gave it one heckuva almighty cast. When I did, somehow a backlash formed (either before the cast or during it) and instantly stopped the line. Well, according to the laws of physics, that 1oz lure was enough weight to jerk the rod/reel right out of my hands and plunked it deep down in 20 feet of water. That left a bad taste in my mouth, and I just now started using a BC, albeit with a tighter grip and better reel. Quote
cast_and_destroy Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I was out fishing at a pond in the winter for trout and we were catching them every cast...nothing big, but fun on ul tackle. Before we got to the pond we noticed a red tail hawk perched in a tree. ..we started fishing and I hooked one, as I was reeling it in this hawk swoops down and grabs my trout. This happened 2 more times after another hawk decided to join the first one. Needless to say I Wasn't too upset, it was really cool to see. ive also fed a heron a bluegill and have had a snake take a bluegill from the end of my line 1 Quote
mikef262 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Last night I was fishing a place called the Allenton boat ramp with friends. Around 10pm guy rolls in with a jet ski and asks us to help him back it up. After getting it in the water he asked how often police patrol the area. Well he gets on the jet ski and tries to start it. The thing wouldn't start. He says he really needs it to start since his buddy is having boat troubles and he needs to jump the boat for him. He finally gets the thing going, turns around, proceeds maybe 50 feet, and it dies. Gets it started again, goes a little further, and it dies. He couldn't get it to start again. He started floating down the river. He managed to get it going again and took off. He said it would take 15 minutes to get there and some time there, and 15 minutes back. 2 hours later he still isn't back. Police called, they didn't know where the Allenton Boat ramp was!!! Its a conservation ground how do they not know where it is!!! 20 minutes later a county cop finds us. We started to hear the guy yell. His jet ski drug bottom, and was stuck. He was towing his friends jet ski. The helicopter was called in, 2 ambulances, 2 fire trucks, a grand total of 4 police cars, and 3 fire boats were called in. The one guy actually swam up the river 200 yards to the ramp! His friend was apparently "stuck" somehow, and couldn't move. He was in the middle of the river and couldn't swim to shore. We never did find out what was preventing him from swimming. It was really odd. Guy asks how often police patrol the area, has a box of .40 s&w hollow points, empty beer cans, and his car smelt of illegal substances. Everybody went home, and the 2 jet ski guys said they were going back to the river around 6 today to try and get their jet skis... Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I used to fish the Upper Potomac river near American Legion bridge, rock hopping my way downstream. It was always productive, some days we caught 100+ Smallmouth on helgramites. Most were not of any great size, but there were some fatties in there. It was always a good, long day fishing. That is, until a nudist began showing up rather regularly. At first he was easy to avoid, then he must have gotten his courage up and began coming in closer to talk, making no effort to cover himself up... creeped me way out, and I've since abandoned going down there to fish. duckmaster55 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Went to Gander Mtn. a local outdoor sporting goods store here in NC earlier. Bought my self a nice $200 spinning rod and reel combo and refused the one year warranty and went on my way to a lake near home to try it out. Pitched a senko under a tree, got caught on a small branch in the water, went to jerk and snap my line.... snapped my pole in half. Craziest thing to this day. Just fantastic. I was fishing up on sodus bay, lake ontario and i also had just bought a quantium spinning rod and reel combo and Gander Mtn just to fill a place for wacky rig fishing that I didnt feel like doing with a baitcaster. The day after i had gotten the setup i was in a tournament in the bay, i was reeling in my senko and i heard something hit the floor of the boat. I wasn't really thinking so I looked over the reel briefly not to waste away time and then reeled again. This time pieces flew everywhere, on the boat and in the water and there was nothing I could do but rig up a baitcaster with a senko. It turns out that in a way I am glad that this reel fell apart and forced me to use my baitcaster for my wacky rig because I ended up hooking the tournaments lunker and there is no doubt in my mind that the spinning reel would have given out then and I would have been just short of the prize money. I went back to Gander with the spinning rod setup and I told customer service that half of my reel was in sodus bay, sure enough they gave me a full refund. Quote
MitchTBF Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Was fishing off my kayak a few weeks ago, and I see what I thought was a Radio Control boat heading at me then turning away, then circling me, then heading towards me and turning away again. I was getting angry since I assumed someone on shore was messing with me, then finally realized it was 2 Beavers and I was pretty close to their lodge. When they were doing that tail slap thing, I though someone was throwing huge rocks in the lake or something. I had no idea up until that time there were Beavers in that area (Princeton NJ). Managed to get a few pics of the event. Not really that crazy, but when I thought it was a R/C Boat I thought I was going to go crazy. Quote
