Jack Fate Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Greetings. Have any of you guys fish Pickwick lake recently? If so how has the bite been? It has not been as good for me this year as in past years. I have heard other locals say the same thing. Many spots that I have fished in the past that have produced fish are not producing. Just wondering if anyone is having better luck and what general area not specific spots of course (i.e. Wilson Dam area, Steam Plant, Waterloo, Pickwick Dam area etc.) Also what techniques have been working for you. I have caught fish using a variety of techniques with soft plastics and crankbaits being top lures but nothing consistent.. I have had nothing bite topwater to speak of..also cannot get them to bite a spinnerbait. Anyone have any tips? Quote
Msbowhunter Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I just signed up on the site and am new to pickwick fishing this year. Recently bout a ranger 520 vx, been 20 years since i had a bass boat. I have been catching em on brush hogs in 17-25 ft of water. Have caught some on crankbait but not near as many as plastics. 1 Quote
KevO Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I've been smashing them on the ledges in the 18-25 FOW range. C-rig, Football jig have done the most damage, but I've caught them on cranks, swimbaits, and spoons too. Mostly fish in the mid lake area. 2 Quote

I have had most of my luck on plastics as well. the deep bite hasn't been there for me much at all except with crankbaits. the shallow bite has not been consistent as in years past. I need to just keep fishing and eventually it will work out! Quote
unageo09 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I usually wait until August before I start fishing again. Things for me really heat up in Spring Creek during that month. I may try to fish it a bit earlier this year to see if I can yield the same results. This time of year for me is tough though. I'm not that good at fishing deeper water. TJS209 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I was up there a week and a half ago. We caught 50 or so. Majority were in that 2-3.5lb range. Caught some on Carolina rig, 6xd, and 10xd. Caught the most on 3/4 football jig. Fishing humps, ledges and underwater points. Caught in 18-25 FOW. Gotta put time on the water and have plenty of spots to check til you find some stacked up. 1 Quote

I could find fish deep, not sure what they were, but could not get them to bite a jig or swimbait. I don't deep crank and must admit I'm not very good fishing deep. Its sounding like deep is the way to go, Me and my buddy have tried some deeper spots, just not the right ones I guess LOL. Gonna have to keep looking for different spots and keep fishing! Quote

Are you fishing the main channel ledge or somewhere else? I'm having trouble finding fish deep also. Quote

Yes I'm fishing the main river, but not the main river channel ledges. I've found my fish on submerged creek channel ledges close to the river channel. Basically I'm fishing the ditches that run along the flats into the river, because there aren't many "real" creeks I can think of in that section. I've looked at the main river ledges but I haven't found a lot there yet. Find a sharp drop about 5 feet with shell or chunk rock and you will find some fish, bait helps too, but hasn't been that important. My best spot is only about 10 yards wide but its has all 3 and just a little grass. Use your electronics, drive more, scan the area with down and side imaging if you have it, look for the sweet spots and mark them on the gps. Its a 2 hr drive for me to get to pickwick, some times I dont even bring a rod just to force me to learn something instead of just fish. Quote

I'm looking at buying some better electronics soon. Right now Im using one that it so old it mainly only serves as a depth finder, kinda like a black and white Atari lol. Right now just using navionics on my phone and my depth finder I can find some ledges but I have no idea if fish are holding there or what the bottom consists of so I end up wasting a lot of time/gas. Have any recommendations for a fish finder under $500? Thanks for the advice Quote
KevO Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 For $500 I'm not sure what you can get new, maybe an Lowrance Elite 5 with GPS. I would look for a used HDS 5 or Humminbird 798 unit. You can get a used Gen 1 HDS 5 for about $400. Quote

I have fished spots similar to those that I've done well on in the past. Just not connecting with them like before. I'm beginning to think that impatience is a lot of my problem Quote
