Dillypickle18 Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 What's the best time and place to use a jitterbug? Weeds?lillypads? Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 20, 2013 Super User Posted June 20, 2013 Open water in the evening into the night. They will snag on any vegetation so unless you have the weedless version stay away from the pads and weeds. I catch quite a few big ones every year on a black jitterbug at night. nothing beats the plunk, plunk, plunk.........then the flushing sound as a bass inhales it Quote
pabassr Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I find the best time to fish a jitterbug is at night also. I fish it slowly, you will hear the fish suck it in his mouth, but do not set the hook until you feel the fish on your line. I also like to use a bigger size jiggerbug at night , the fish just seem to prefer the larger profile bait. ( one warning though, watch out for owls) I`ve had owls come and grab the jiggerbug right off the water. Then trying to get lure back from owl is not fun! Quote
Super User Marty Posted June 20, 2013 Super User Posted June 20, 2013 The Jitterbug is my most-used lure. I'll fish it anywhere that the weeds will allow it and I'll fish it any time of day under any kind of sky as long as I think that the fish will come up for a topwater. I've caught and seen caught loads of fish caught on it and other topwaters under bluebird skies as well as the more conventional low light conditions. Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted June 21, 2013 Super User Posted June 21, 2013 I discovered the jitterbug just this past month. Awesome lure. I've had good success early morning (before the sun comes up). Don't fish it through the weeds and lily pads but if you can run it along the edge you should definitely call out some bigguns. That's how I got the fish in my avatar. Open waters good too. If there's a topwater bite, you'll do well with this lure. Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted June 21, 2013 Super User Posted June 21, 2013 At night time I like to use it on open water that is over bottom structure. In early morning or early evening I like to parallel weeds, or brush. Quote
tholmes Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I loves me some jitterbug action! I fish a black jitterbug at night over submerged vegetation. It's deadly. Tom Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 21, 2013 Super User Posted June 21, 2013 Run it parallel to the lily pad edge or if you have weed cutters on the lake, throw them down the channels it creates. Fun bait to fish. I don't use them that much but I did a lot when I was a kid. Quote
