Revival Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 What are your opinions on using red hooks? When replacing the hooks on my 1.0 cranks i bought the red EWG gamakatsu red treble hooks along with the Mustad trebles. All the fish that i have caught on them have been on the ones with the mustads. I havent caught a fish on a 1.0 with the red trebles yet. I also have some red EWG hooks for my plastics which I havent caught anything while using it either. I dont know what to think of it. Quote
BrettD Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I don't think it makes any difference at all personally but some people swear by red hooks. Its what ever makes you feel confident. Quote
GoneFishi'n Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 As stated before me and many, many, many times in other topics its really just a confidence thing. I've heard some people say it makes it look like the bait or lure is bleeding which I highly doubt a bass really cares. I personally just think because its red company's do that to draw attention to their product and make it stand out from the rest. Quote
mc6524 Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Remember, the color red disappears at depths of 6-8 feet. If that's the case, then the color red should have no impact. Quote

No. The color red only "disappears" on transparent things, like mono fishing line. Opaque things like lures, and braided line can still be seen. I could care less what color hook I use as long as it holds a fish. 1 Quote

flippin and pitchin Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 If red hooks were the deal, why isn't every umbrella rig red wire? I'm not sold on the red hook idea at all. Quote
mc6524 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Actually the color red disappears at 15 foot depth. Orange is the next color at 25 feet. It does not matter whether its fishing line or hooks. 1 Quote
Downeaster2010 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 To me the red hooks are a farse. They are just gold hooks repainted with red, and the red wears off exposing a gold hook. I like the standard black ones, and think all the red is just a gimmick to catch the fishermen. Seems to have worked. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 21, 2013 Super User Posted June 21, 2013 I was under the impression that when red hooks were designed it was to add a "bleeding" look to the lure. As mentioned, it won't disappear at depths. I have red hooks and I have regular. I use the regular way more and I have never seen a difference in using red. Confidence. Quote
fadetoblack21 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I have a mixture of red and non painted ewg hooks. Never noticed a difference between the number of fish I catch on the red hooks vs the non red hooks. To me the red hooks are a farse. They are just gold hooks repainted with red, and the red wears off exposing a gold hook. I like the standard black ones, and think all the red is just a gimmick to catch the fishermen. Seems to have worked. It very well may be a gimmick to catch the fisherman, but the ones I buy cost the same as the standard hooks so I see no problem buying them. Quote

In my humble opinion, 90% of fish lures and innovations are designed to catch fishermen, not fish. I don't care what color it is as long as it is not going to reflect light. So, I haven't used a gold hook in many years. I have red ones and black and grey. I can't tell any difference. Quote
Revival Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 all the red is just a gimmick to catch the fishermen. Seems to have worked. I bought the red hooks out of convenience and not because i thought i was going to catch more fish on it. Tell me who hasnt fallen for a fishing marketing gimmick before? I know I have. Sad to say years ago i bought the "Flying Lure", "Banjo Minnow" and even the crankbaits with the flashing lights in them. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 The only baits I have that have red hooks are some Cavitron buzz baits. Not much red left on the hook anymore. Quote
Downeaster2010 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Don't get me wrong, I have red hooks as well. A lot of fishermen here in Maine like the smaller ones in red for catching trout. Yes, they were to present a bleeding effect, but I like most of you catch just as many on the regular hooks. I do think that the hooks that come in the watermelon green, might be more of a camo effect when fishing than regular hooks. I powder coated a lot of my weighted hooks in the Watermelon color. I am looking for a camo effect rather than a bleeding effect. Years back I fell for a plug called the Heart throbber. When twitched an internal weight would throb throwing off vibrations once left to sit and float. I did catch some fish on it but mostly at night. We've all bought gimmick lures. Quote
wngan9447 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Wow... i'm going to be honest. I have red hooks, but never bought them for the color. It was the size/style I needed and never thought twice about the hook color. I use the red hooks for texas rigs on Palm Trees. The color is rubbing off just like someone had already said, but i'm paying no mind to it. Quote
PABASS Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I have red hooks and I don't know if its the color and or added flash but in certain situation red works and other times it doesn't. I like red hooks on my jerkbaits and pop-rs. Quote
Thatbasstardbrent Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I always use my red vmc hooks no problem. I actually prefer them in cedar water. Quote

Although the Banjo Minnow may not be what it eas talked up to be in those awful infomercials... I kind of like them. Lol. They may not be the "perfect lure" like they had suggested but on occasion it has worked very well for me. Overall I still find it to be a respectable bait. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 22, 2013 Global Moderator Posted June 22, 2013 Almost all my cranks have red VMCs on them. I have no way to prove or disprove their effectiveness but they cost the same as the black nickel and are just as sharp so I use them. They certainly don't seem to scare any fish off and I have confidence in them which is one of the most important things there is when it comes to putting fish in the boat. Quote
BassAssassin726 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Studies have shown that while bass can obviously see color, they dont have the brain processing power to associate red with blood. They can see red but they cant think to themselves hey that fish is bleeding! They are conscious but not self aware. They cant think like we do. Still though if it gives you confidence then go for it! Quote

I know people that have caught fishing using them too. But darn it, I never caught a fish on every cast like I thought it would! Anyone else remember the Flying Lure. It was around in the early 90's. It was the lure that "swam away from you". Im derailing my own thread...haha. Carry on. Quote
