Rand Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 My loacl lake, Geist Reservoir, has gotten steadily more weeds over the years. I was thinking of attempting to punch this year. What punch weights, stops, baits, etc do you use? I am looking to buy some but I don't know where to start. Thx Rand 1 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I just released Tungsten Punch weights. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/120314-tungsten-punch-rigs-new/ I use a 7'3" GLX. Same rod I use for Frogging and Flipping. You need a good stout rod and I recommend braid. 2 Quote
BrettD Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I use a dobyns 766 its a 7'6" heavy fast rod 65# braid 1.5oz tungsten weight 80% of the time sometimes a 1oz sometimes 2oz. I use the 6th sense bobbers tops I have tried the cheaper ones and didn't have good luck. I use a 4/0 straight shank mustad Denny Brauer flipping hook with a beaver or craw type bait. Quote
gr8outdoorz Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I use a St Croix 7'9" H , Revo Premier with 65 lb braid, 1 1/2 oz tungsten weight, punch skirt (tie my own), Trokar flippin hook, and craw or creature bait. As stated before, you definitely need a stout rod & braid! Quote
BenB54 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I just ordered some SO punch rigs but as of right now, my punch/flip&pitch setups consist of a couple of 7'6" h/f rods that I personally like for 1oz. and under weights and a couple of 7'8" h/f rods for 1.5oz weights with 7-1 reels with 65# power pro. I like the River2Sea trash bomb weights, sixth sense punch stops, paycheck baits punch skirts, and gamakatsu heavy cover flipping hooks with reaction innovations sweet beaver 4.20's. Missile baits dbomb's and big bite yodaddy and yomammas work well also, but whatever flipping bait you like will work. Quote
Rand Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 Right on guys. Much appreciated. I have a Dobyns 765 Flip paired with a Revo SX and PowerPro braid that I am hoping to give a workout. Quote
Super User David P Posted June 25, 2013 Super User Posted June 25, 2013 I use a Dobyns 805 Punch Rod, Revo Premier with 80lb braid and a 1.5oz Tungsten weight. I like all beaver type baits. Some people like more durable baits so that the hook stays in better and doesn't go through the other end, but I have noticed a decrease in hookups with the stiffer baits. Usually go through a full bag of beavers, sometimes two in a full day trip of punching, but well worth the fun! Enjoy! Quote
flipin4bass Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 My favorites: HooDaddy Sr. and Damiki Monster Miki with skirted punch weights. Quote
G3Steve Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I use a Dobyns Champ 805, Curado E, 80lb Power Pro, 1.5oz tungsten, Dirty Jigs punch skirt and sweet beaver on a paycheck baits 4/0 straight shank flipping hook. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 26, 2013 Super User Posted June 26, 2013 I just released Tungsten Punch weights. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/120314-tungsten-punch-rigs-new/ I use a 7'3" GLX. Same rod I use for Frogging and Flipping. You need a good stout rod and I recommend braid. Yep, a heavy weight. Use a "heavy" rod. Consider using high test fluorocarbon or braid with a fluorocarbon leader. (I don't like weak links in my line so I go with 100% 17-pound test fluorocarbon line on a baitcaster to avoid the leader to braid knot.) You may want to consider tungsten as outlined in the post as it is smaller than lead. The Siebert jigs are excellent baits to punch through the grass. And they are excellent baits altogether! GET SOME!!! One tip that I learned many years ago when the world was water: Take a paddle and make a hole in the grass as deep as you can. Wait one hour or longer. Return to the hole and drop your bait into it. You may have to wait until the next day or a few days but the opening in the grass will attract the bass. You will need to make a bunch of holes and then come back and fish them. I have had success dropping a YUM Dinger, Senko, drop shot and shaky head into any holes I see in the grass and weeds. Let us know what baits and weights you throw and how you do. Good luck. Quote
martintheduck Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 1oz lead painted lead weight (when I need to save $), punch skirt black w/red or black w/ blue, 4/0 EWG owner, Venom dream craws. I use 30lb braid (any brand) on a 7'2 M/H fast rod. I'd prefer a 7'2 heavy and I'm just waiting to purchase one. If you haven't done much punching before, let me just tell you my experience, there is a learning curve. I IMPLORE you, don't just go find a huge spot of mat and start busting through it. I've had good success on the borders of mat, smaller isolated pockets of mat, open pockets in big mat patches... I've never had much success just aimlessly punching through stuff. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 26, 2013 Super User Posted June 26, 2013 Martin, on the Potomac River, the one that made George Washington famous, we have lots of grass. Beautiful grass. All over the place. What you penned about fishing all around the grass, in small isolated pockets of grass, holes in the grass, etc. is right on target. I use a heavy 7' rod; tungsten weight; something that will slide through the grass; and 65-pound braid tied straight to the 3/0 EWG hook. Those Siebert jigs look like they would work beautifully, too. I have also had good luck throwing, of all things, a drop shot. Yes, a drop shot with a pink bait. I do accumulate some grass but that drop shot can work. Give it a try and see if you get any good bites. Great post. You need to go to LSU. Quote
PondBoss Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 7'6" Ethos XH, 30lb Spider Wire Stealth 3/8-1 1/2oz tungsten weight Quote
Zach P Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Powell 7'7" Med Hvy Flippin Rod, Revo Stx 7:1:1, 65 Pound Sunline FX2 Braid, 1/2oz to 1oz weight, bobber stopper (doesn't really matter which brand) and a VMC 5/0 Flippin Hook, Bait depends on conditions Quote
frantzracing0 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I Can't Say Enough About The SiebertOutdoor Punch Jigs I Just Got. They Are Fantastic. Only Had Them A Few Days And Iv Pulled In Plenty Of Fish Already. Great Quality, And A Great Price Quote
Rand Posted June 29, 2013 Author Posted June 29, 2013 Great replies guys. Thanks for the info. All is much appreciated. Awesome to get such response. Quote
Grantman83 Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 I don't do enough to justify a rod specifically for punching. I double up my frogging rod which is the champion 736. Great tip and 65lb braid does double duty for both applications. I like trokar flipping hooks because they aren't as long as other hooks. I can upsize my hook and use a wider variety of bait sizes. If you want a great bait that doesn't move, check out the Havoc Slop Craw. It was a plastic keel like keeper built into the bait which adds an extra place to keep the bait on beside the hook keeper. You can use one bait for a long long time. Quote

CPBassFishing Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 For punching, I use a heavy action rod, 65lb braid, with a tungsten weight ranging from 1 to 1.5 oz. I peg the weight with a 6th sense bobber stop. These work the best for me. Following the weight is a 4/0 gamakastu heavy cover flipping hook. The stock keeper is junk so I cut it off and solder the keeper directly to the hook. The only bait I punch with is a powerteam lures bully grass devil. It slides through the mats easily, lasts 5-6 fish, and gets great hookups. Here's a pic of it. Also, if I am targeting larger fish I add a punch skirt between the weight and the hook. Quote
Grantman83 Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Yea man I think they are great...really good at staying on the keeper...as sleek and trip of a punching bait as you can get Quote
