Has anyone bought an outboard without a title and tried to go get a title for it?

outboards dont need titles, boats do

Not in Missouri. The boat, motor, and trailer all require titles.

OP, i think if you bought the motor in a state that doesn't require a title you need a bill of sale showing where you bought it and fill out a title application for it. The DOR website is kind of vague on what to do other than they tell you to call the license office.

I think Missouri is a state that has personal property tax. They need to keep track of what you own so you can pay the tax on it every year.

Yep, makes buying a boat on CL from Illinois who doesn't have those rules hard to do.  And like Team_Daughtery said, we have to pay Personal Property Tax on that kind of stuff every year.  It's kind of a rip off...

I love my state.  No titles for boat, motors, or trailer.!!!!!!

Heck, you don't even need to register your trailer in TN.  But, you better be able to provide proof of insurance for the trailer.  I found that out three years ago when I lost my trailer plate somewhere in PA on the route from MA to TN, for the Road Trip.  When I got to TN, I tried to get a plate bracket at a boat dealer so I could put a temporary plate on my trailer.   That's where I was told you didn't need a plate in TN.  Felt like I was in a time warp.

You need to get a form from the license bureau and take that and your bill of sale to the local police or state police and they sign off it wasn't stolen.

in Missouri you need a title, everyone keeps talking about their own states but in MISSOURI you need a title. (for any gas motor I think)  If you do not have one you need a Bill of Sale from person you bought from and have to have Missouri Highway Patrol (which are now part of Water Patrol) to run a check on it for a stolen motor unless the motor was once titled in you name in which case i believe you can file a lost title with the DMV.  If a seller will not give you a BofS then it is most likely not theirs to sell.

State law could have changed in the past 11 years.

Which is when this thread started.
