pbrussell Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 There was a time in my life, where for some reason I didn't keep a scale around. Call me foolish. Perhaps I just didn't see the need for one at the time (I've since seen the error of my ways. It is nice to have something more official than an eyeball guesstimate.) That being said, here is a fish I caught in the year of 2010. I had just gotten back into fishing that year, and my ultimate goal at the time was simply to catch "a 5 pounder." In fact, I'd never caught a bass over three pounds up until that year. Then it happened at a pond a buddy took me to. This thing was a true kansas swamp donkey. Call pond fishin' what you will, this bass was huge. Obviously, this was a "5 pounder". I didn't have a scale though, and I sure wish I would've. So let's play a game. What do you think this bass weighed? We'll never be able to know for sure, but it sure is nice to speculate. Quote
pbrussell Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 Nice 2 pounder. She fought more like a 3 man... I swear up and down. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 19, 2013 Super User Posted June 19, 2013 That's gotta be over 6. Probably closer to 8. 1 Quote
pbrussell Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 That's gotta be over 6. Probably closer to 8. I've tangled with/ weighed quite a few number of high 5's low 6's (but no high 6's interestingly enough). This fish... was different than those fish. I'd put it somewhere around 7-7.25 personally. BrettD Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I would guess around 6# its a pretty short fish. 1 Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted June 19, 2013 Super User Posted June 19, 2013 I would say it's between 5 and 6. The one in my avatar is 6lbs 10oz Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 19, 2013 Super User Posted June 19, 2013 Thick fish, a little short, but very broad. I'd say 6-6.5 Jeff Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted June 19, 2013 Super User Posted June 19, 2013 Somewhere between 96 and 112 . . . . . . . . .ounces. It's all relative. A-Jay Quote
Quirkyfisher Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I just had a thread where it turned out my PB was around 1.5lb less than I originally thought because my scale was not zero'd out, so my bass was around the 6.5lb mark, who knows maybe 6-6.5 Anyway, you're fish resembles mine, short and really fat. So I would say this is also 6-6.5. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted June 20, 2013 Super User Posted June 20, 2013 I would say it's between 5 and 6. The one in my avatar is 6lbs 10oz And exactly why "guessing" fish weight from a picture is only guessing, The one in my avatar is 6-10 as well...weighed on two scales, and caught in a tournament, but from comparing pictures, yours "looks" bigger. 1 Quote

Yeah. Always fun to hear what folks think. Quote
pbrussell Posted June 20, 2013 Author Posted June 20, 2013 Pictures are certainly deceiving. Take for example these photos. Everyone swears this girl went bigger than what she did because of her length. However I remember what the scale read when she was on it. Quote
jherm87 Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I'm thinking 6-6.5 as well. I weighed one today, it was 16 inches, I was ready to toss it back, but thought man this is heavy. Threw it on the scale, 4lbs14oz. Should have taken a picture, but I'm over it unless they're big or really nice looking Quote

You had a bass 4.14 and you said you were ready to toss it back because it didn't look big? Shoot, any size fish 4.14 looks big. Plus at 16 inches...were you fishing the king fisher society in NC? Quote
jherm87 Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I grabbed it like any 3lber I've caught, and unhooked it. It may have been 18 inches, but it did weigh in at 4.12 sorry didn't mean to put 14 oz. Either way it was fat. I've found some amazing fishing this year and 3-3.5# fish have become very normal where I'm fishing. It looked like a short fish, and I was pier fishing, so most of thr time I just lip them, un hook and get them back into the water as quickly as possible. There are too many people dropping them and laying them on the hot deck anyway. Quote

Exactly why I think my scale was off because I see a lot of pics and my fish trumps em. I caught one te other day that was 5-12 and the one in my avatar looked double the size. I have a new scale BTW Quote
