Hey i was wondering how to catch Bass 3 lbs and up during summer.  I fish in NJ at a pond with a ton of weeds in it.  I prefer using soft plastics rather than lures but i will use other types of bait.

Try a 7" Senko or even a 9" Slug-go. Texas rigged on a 7/0 worm hook. Fish early in the morning or after dark. You will not get many, but they will be quality bites.

My biggest bass was caught on a rebel big claw crawfish crankbait at 4:30 to 5:00am. I was fishing up at  3:30am everyday from spring till I get burned out by June or July.  I hammered it everyday ever since I retired. That's the only way we can catch these bigger, smarter gals.  She was two feet from shore in the shallows.  The bigger fish are in the shallows during the darkness feeding then they disappear like this

I'm trying to break the state record of 12lbs.14ozs. So far I'm up to 10lbs.

One more thing is being stealthy when trying to catch these trophy sized fish. I find big bass in every small body of water. There not being caught because there smart. When I walk up to my spot I'm in stealth mode. I handle my rods and tackle boxes very quietly.  Walk softly too.  Do not make any noise. I cleared my throat once and seen a very large wake in the water swimming away from me. I spooked it. We need to act like we're not even there we need to be that quiet. It's not luck in fishing it's skill.

I can only suggest what works for me.  I once fished and lived in Westwood,NJ.  Bogarts pond was my learning ground as a little kid.

Fishing in the evenings the bass are higher in numbers but not as  big as the early am. Plus the place is quieter with you being the only one fishing.

Fish big and slow. In other words, larger baits with a very slow retrieve. Large bass get big by not expending too much energy (why you slow down) and when they use their energy, make sure the meal is worth it. You won't put as many in the livewell but your average size should increase.

Pond with allot of weeds? Are the weeds under the water or all the way to the top? If submerged I would throw a double prop buzzbait. My experience with small ponds is that there aren't that many key spots where the big fish hang, which is good for you. The bass won't willingly leave her spot, knowing this I've found pond bass are vulnerable to a buzz. Its making allot of noise, passing over her head time after time and time again. Sooner or later they crush that buzz. Make repeated cast at differing angles until the fish is finally annoyed enough to hit the lure. During one summer, the best I ever had, I broke my PB 4-5 times, lost count of bass between 4-5 lb range, ended up with 3 over seven the best being 8.14 all in the same pond caught in the same general area. I fished almost everyday, caught several on plastics but every fish over 7lbs came on a buzz.

The first thing you need to be able to is find water with bass that big, and I'll tell you at least in North Jersey, there are not a lot of public waters that do. Other than that, what you are using to catch bass that are 1-2 lbs will probably still be good enough to catch bass up to about 5 lbs.

X2 Find water nobody fishes. I fish two small quarry lakes 90 percent of the time and usually catch at least a 3lb everytime. Theyre out there. In our area there isnt many ten pounders but theres tons of quality 3-5 pound fish all over the place. You just have to put in the time and effort and find the honey holes. Use Google Maps to find small ponds and lakes then fish them with big baits. 10-16 inch worms, big crankbaits and jigs.

I use Yamamoto Palm Trees to get me decent sized LMB when the worms are pulling in small guys.

Buzz baits, Jigs, and Senkos will all work. But, if you have a "ton of weeds" try a 1/2 oz. Johnson Silver Minnow in silver or gold and add a 4" plastic grub or plastic split-tail trailer. I've been using it for well over 40 years and can verify that you can catch some BIG fish with it.

Best advise I can give on catching the big one is to have your line in the water ;)

Fish at night with your soft plastics, go up to 9" to 12" T-rig with 3/16 sinker, 4/0 worm hook.

65# Power Pro main line and 25# Big Game as leader. Once you catch several fish on it it's worth it haha. I'm getting 4 more in a couple of days, they're worth it.

I'm actually glad to hear someone not poor-mouthing about fishing.  Drives me crazy to hear all these people trying save a buck on line or melting worms to reuse them.  Good grief.  I know everyone has needs but it reminds me of people driving across town to save a penny on gas when 10 gallons amounts to a savings of 10 cents.

I may try one if I find one.

Just remember you need heavy gear for it. You can get one on TW.
