Thaddeus Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I am in the market for a 2000 size reel. Would like to stick with Shimano as I have a Sustain 1000 and Stradic ci4 2500. This would pair up with a Dobyns 702sf for dropshots, light shaky heads, dartsheads, and river fishing for smallies up in Minnesota. Is anyone familiar with Japan's (JDM) 2000 Shimano offerings? Are they a true 2000 body like what Daiwa offers or just 1000 size bodies with 2000 spools? I am specifically looking at the 2010 Complex Ci4 2000HGS F3, 2011 Biomaster C2000HGS, and 2012 Ultegra C2000HGS. I would most likely be purchasing through eBay to get a price around $200. What do you guys think? Maybe I should just quit being brand loyal and grab a 2000 size Daiwa Ballistic? Sucks that Shimano doesn't offer a 2000 size in the states. Quote
EvanT123 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 If there is a 'c' in the name ie, c2000hgs it's a campact body. 1000 size with a 2000 size spool. Quote
Thaddeus Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 thank you! So the 2010 Complex Ci4 2000HGS F3 is a true 2000 size? Are there any other JDM 2000 reels that you'd recommend that is between $150-250? Quote
Thaddeus Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Would this reel be a true 2000 size? http://www.cloudninetackle.jp/product/247 Shimano Soare ci4 30 2000HGS Quote
EvanT123 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I would think if it doesn't have the c in front it would be a 2000 size but I don't know for sure. I was interested in buying a jdm shimano(twinpower)for awhile but settled on the stradic 1. Because if anything happens to it or is faulty shimano usa would service or warranty it. They won't service jdm reels. 2. The twinpower has more bearings then the stradic but 2 are in the handle and the other supports the drag. I could add two to the handle and the one on the drag isn't a big deal to me. Compared to the stradic I couldn't justify the purchase. My personal opinion if I was to buy jdm it would be daiwa ie luvias caldia or something like that. Daiwa usa would service them but there in lies another issue they are magsealed and you can't service them yourself and a service from daiwa would run 60-80 bucks. 1 Quote
Thaddeus Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 Good point. I did a little more research and discovered (I think-Japanese translated web pages are rough) that the 2000HGS is a 2500 size body. Wondering if the Complex Ci4 2000HGS F3 is a true 2000 (not much info on these reels). Leaning towards just getting a Daiwa 2000 now... Quote
thehooligan Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Is there reason why this has to be a 2000 sized reel ? A 1000 sized shimano would be more then adequate. Quote
Thaddeus Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 I want more line capacity as I will be using 8lb flourocarbon Quote
jtharris3 Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I love the Shimano Symetre. Been fishing them for 25+ years. Quote
thehooligan Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I want more line capacity as I will be using 8lb flourocarbon Just go ci4 2500, you get the bigger spool, and the reel will be lighter then most 1000/2000 size reels. 1 Quote

But since I use the same rods I want the reels to be different somehow. I love my ci4 2500. There is a JDM reel called the Rarenium ci42500 that is basically the US ci4 but a different color (actually hear from many that it is a better quality reel-smoother,less handle play). I might pull the trigger and buy one this week. Quote
thehooligan Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Nice, I almost bought one off eBay but ended up getting a great deal on a sustain 1000 fg. 1 Quote
Thaddeus Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 I just purchased a brand Shimano Rarenium 2500 FA for $198 including shipping. Can't wait to get it on the water!!! 1 Quote
Bluesteel Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Hi Thaddeus, Did you get a Rarenium 2500 or 2500S. I know the "S" is for shallow spool. I was interested in getting one too but am afraid in colder conditions that the shallower spool will allow the stiff line to fall off and cause tangles. I usually fish for steelhead in temps under freezing. Have you had any issues with the shallow spool? Thanks for your imput, and if you could share the website or link to where you made your purchase. Quote
BobP Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I got a Biomaster 2500 3-4 years ago and was surprised that it was the same size as a 2000 size U.S. Shimano. Very nice reel and smooth as butter, I've been happy using it for dropshotting with 6-8 lb fluoro and have never felt the need for a larger reel. Quote

I pair it with a Dobyns Champion 702sf w/ 8lb flourocarbon and it's one of my favorite combos. I use it dropshotting for bass and lindy rigging for walleye, and jig fishing on the river. I bought mine from Petrimart which is a German online tackle shop. I found a coupon online and got mine for $194 which included shipping. Got it in 4 days. http://www.petrimart.com/rarenium-ci4-2500-fa?filter_name=Rarenium Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Looks like you made a nice purchase. Just wanted to add that there is no such thing as a "true xxxx size" reel. The reel companies stay somewhat in tune for shopper comparison but there is no standard , it's all subjective on the part of the manufacturer. Quote
21farms Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 i've had numerous USDM shimano and daiwa spinning reels. i've found that 2500-size shimanos are closer in body size to 2000-size daiwas and that 2500-size daiwa bodies are quite a bit larger. Quote
21farms Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 i recently picked up a 2500-size JDM shimano complex BB...as you can see compared to my fingers, it is quite compact: Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 22, 2013 Super User Posted November 22, 2013 My man, watch out when you purchase japanese Shimano spinning reels, Shimano in Japan offers much more models within the same reel than it offers for the domestic market. Look closely ! a S after the size number indicates the reel has a SHALLOW SPOOL, then we have PG means POWER GEAR in Christian it means lower gear ratio, or HG meaning HIGH GEAR in Christian higher gear ratio tan the regular model. To make it more confusing, lets´s suppose you encounter something like this: Biomaster ( equivalent to the Stradic ) 2500PGS ----> spool size identical to the 2500 but with shallow capacity, body 2500 size but with gear lower gear ratio. There are several combinations of spool capacity and gear ratio available, if you don´t ask the seller you may end up purchasing a reel you may not want. Quote
Bluesteel Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Thad, Did you have any trouble with shipping or having to pay duty or customs taxes when purchasing from Petrimart? Thanks Quote
