ColdSVT Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 sent my first one back after six weeks and having a problem post cast with the spool not engaging and having to reset the drag thereafter....Got my replacment a few days ago and guess what? I am sending that one back after the first cast once again the spool would not engage. couldnt reel in anything. still cant as a matter of fact my gen 2 STX is flawless and has been since I got it, wth is going on with the gen 3? I will not be getting a 3rd gen 3, it is gonna be a chronarch or a lews TP there is no good reason to send two reels that retailed for nearly $200 back in the same month. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 18, 2013 Super User Posted June 18, 2013 I feel you pain brother. Ive returned 2 brands of reels the past few months would have really liked to keep them just issues. Im not a brand loyalists but I replace them with Shimanos (one being a Chronarch) and they are working without a hiccup no noise smooth operation and great spool management. A Chronarch is definitely one reel to check out. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 18, 2013 Super User Posted June 18, 2013 I thought that the very first Gen 3 models were just released to too quick and had some bugs. Word was Abu made some minor adjustments and it was fixed. Reports started falling off about issues with them. Now it seems like its coming back. I hated that all my Gen 3 Revos went sour. I do love my Shimanos, but kinda miss the way the revos felt when I first got them. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 18, 2013 Super User Posted June 18, 2013 Cold, that is not a nice story you told. We put a lotof faith in all of our equipment and to have any equipment fail is upsetting. Â I can understand one reel going bad after a few times on the water but not like what you experienced. Â I agree about getting a Lews or Shimano. These two reels seem to have tight tolerances and better quality innards. Â (I like that word "innards.") Â Do you think the two reels came from the same "batch" and those reels were messed up during the manufacturer process? Quote

Do you think the two reels came from the same "batch" and those reels were messed up during the manufacturer process? I dunno about the batches, my 201e curado and citca have, been through hell and perform jusy like when they were new, same for my calcutta and my johnny morris rick clunn edition, same for my gen 2 STX. I dont know what happened at abu. I mean when the gen 3 worked it was friggin awesome, but I expect my equipment to work as hard for me as I do to keep them them in good working order. I guess I am just dissapointed in the the gen3 and what I is,suppossed to be Quote
ColdSVT Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 conversly the new Croix LTB that I got with my original gen 3 STX is one bad mutha! 7'1 jig/ spinnerbait rod...omg that thing is outstanding!!!!!!! Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Shimano. I dumped all of my Revos because I had nothing but issues out of them. Not a hiccup with my Chronarchs. Abu really screwed the pooch with the Gen 3s. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 This whole Revo Gen 3 thing is so bizarre. I have 5 STX reels just got my 5th one Friday night and I fished them all Saturday, Sunday and today and have not had a problem with one of them. Including the newest one which was fished right out of the box,  I have read and heard about all the problems. Would be interesting to see if the reels with problems were the same date code or not. But I doubt that would be possible. I just hope my reels keep performing and I really hope Abu Garcia steps up and takes care of these problems. 1 Quote
Goose21 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I have two mgx's, love them Have a gen 3 Revo S, and STX, after a long winterth in the garage both cast about half the distance they did new out of the box. My uneducated guess is thst both need a good cleaning and gear lube replacement. I Have a Lews TP speed spool that is in the same shape. Debating whether to send them to DVT for a cleanup or just sell and move on, but I'd hate to unload a sick reel to someone else just to deal with my same headache. I'm all ears at this point guys. Thanks Quote
POPRG Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 dang,i love my two GEN2 STX reels [1-6.4:1 and 1-7.1:1]..fish the hell outta them 4-6 times a week and they both have been flawless,so much that i was contemplating a new GEN3 STX or possibly an MGX,but now,i'm not sure? whats going on abu?? Quote

I bought the gen2 just,to try something new. great real so I bought a gen3. I still like my gen2 but im not gonna own another gen3. back to shimano I go or perhaps a lews tp Quote
bass1980 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Wow I almost bought some used Revo STX. Somehow I ended up in a conversation with two people that didn't know each other this past week. Both said they have had issues with the thumb bar. Then the guy that was trying to sell me his STX said thats the reason he's selling his Revos. He got a replacement too and didn't want to take a chance anymore. I was in the market for a STX or Chronarch and I guess it was a coincident that I engaged in these conversation and this basically made my decision to get a Chronarch. Sorry don't want this to turn into a Abu vs Shimano but just telling my story. That sucks because the Revos feels great in my hand since I don't have massive hands. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 18, 2013 Super User Posted June 18, 2013 Wow. I would not have expected an Abu reel to have these types of problems. I guess with all the manufacturers cutting back and trying to make things cheaper it was only a matter of time before this happened. Quote
bass1980 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 If I was to make a guess I don't think it's about cutting cost. The Gen 3 is a new design. If anything it's just a design flaw that passed inspection but probably started to have problems on 15% of reels now and maybe more to come. So far I've heard people have been able to exchange their reels in with no issues. Quote
BrettD Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I have a gen 3 stx and haven't had a problem except its a little loud. I also have a few lews TP and they are more refined and smoother. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted June 18, 2013 Super User Posted June 18, 2013 Do you suppose, since they both had the same problem, that they could have sent back the same reel by accident? Hootie Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Don't tell me this. I got a gen 3 stx 8 fear coming soon Quote
ColdSVT Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Do you suppose, since they both had the same problem, that they could have sent back the same reel by accident? Hootie no I put a blue x on the bottom of the one I sent back first Quote
21farms Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 no I put a blue x on the bottom of the one I sent back first i had the same problem with my new 3G STX-SHS. i put a little silver dot on the bottom of the reel foot to see if they'd fix mine or send me a new one since other people reported receiving new ones as replacements. mine with the little silver dot came back with a note that said they "adjusted the clutch plate". believe it or not, i wanted them to fix my reel and send that one back to me instead of getting a new one so that i could be sure the problem was addressed. based on what happened to the OP with his replacement reel, i'm even more glad! ColdSVT Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 21farms, my first reel was less than 2 months old, they just replaced it under warranty Quote
sarcazmo Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 All these revo problems are unsettling. Â I've recently become enamored with the lews bb1... I believe they are manufactured by the same company that makes Abus reels and the PQ. Â Bring on the daiwa tatula! Quote
thharleyrider Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I have definetely bought my LAST Abu Garcia product. I changed to Diawa many years ago because my grandfather who was always an Abu Garcia man had problems with 2 new reels and couldnt get them resolved. I seen the Wench Gen 3 and figured I would give it a try. purchased it new in Dec 2012 used it once the line guide was skinning the line. Sent it to warranty center and contacted customer service. Mid June still waiting on reel and NO response from customer service. ANYTHING but Abu Garcia for my fishing. Quote

I have always had great luck with their customer service. I also have been a Abu Garcia user for ever since that is what my grandpa taught me to fish with as well. But all of these problems you keep hearing about sure makes you leary every time you buy one of their new reels. So far no problems for any of my new Gen 3 revos Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted June 19, 2013 Super User Posted June 19, 2013 Hearing all these complaints is disappointing. I have two Gen 3 models and knock on wood so far, so good. I have had them for close to year and they have been great. Quote
