I'd suggest the Revo S for beginning casters as I feel the centrifugal brakes are more use friendly. Mike is the pro, and I agree that a centrifugal brake should be easier for a beginner to learn on. I learned on magnetic only reels (and the majority of my reels are magnetic only), but find it much easier to throw light baits on a Curado 51E than on my Daiwa Sol, Alphas ito or TD-Z 105H. Quote

Super User Felix77 Posted June 18, 2013 Super User Posted June 18, 2013 That's nicer than most of my setups. My recommendation for a starter setup would be a 6'6" Medium baitcaster with a 6.x:1 reel. Perfect first baitcaster setup. I like Abu's too. My setups revolve around the Silver and Pro Max reels and Rhapsody Rod's. Quote
Arv Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 For 100 bucks you can get the BPS PQ. A solid reel to start off with. It has both centrifugal and magnetic brakes. If you want to bump up your price range, the Abu Revo S and Shimano Citica would be good choices. If you want to stay around 150 I'd check out the Lews Tournament Speed Spool. Another reel I'd suggest checking out is the Daiwa Lexa. I don't have any experience with it but it gets a lot of good reviews. Everything I hear about the Vendetta isn't bad, but I would recommend bumping up your price to 100 bucks. I feel like there are a lot of quality choices for the price at that point. Abu Veritas, St. Croix Mojo, *** and Shimao Compre would all be good choices. Quote

It's one hell of a reel, I can launch senkos a country mile and I have one on my swimbait rod as well and it can throw hudds pretty d*** far. It never backlashes on me either, when tuned right to the bait I'm throwing I don't even have to use my thumb to stop it Quote
