MrTexasRigs Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Alright, I'm not getting some very good responses/none at all on my other post. This one is a little more general sounding. Alright so I'm looking at a worm and jig rod. It may not be the best rod, but I'm getting a great deal on it. My question is what would be better an xfast action or fast action to use this for jigs and plastics (mostly texas rigs.) I will use it all year round and in the summer in pretty deep water 15ft+. The rod is a Shimano Clarus 6'8" med heavy xfast or fast action. Which one should i get, which will give me the best sensitivity, best visible tip detection, be the best for these applications, and not be overkill that i set the hook way too hard lol. Thanks, Zach Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 17, 2013 Super User Posted June 17, 2013 I dont know what more I could have posted in the other thread. The XF action is what I would suggest for your needs. Keep in mind bud, its 1130 on a sunday night. Most guys are in bed or spending the remaining day with family, NOT haning out on a forum. It's fathers day Quote

Didn't think about that considering I'm 16. I've realized that posting a topic with more of a specific title on for say brand specific, doesn't get me a good majority of responses. I've been def. leaning towards the xfast action as well. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 17, 2013 Super User Posted June 17, 2013 By tomorrow night you should have plenty of responses on the Clarus rod. They are well liked by many members here. They are a step down from the Compre line, but I felt they were a better rod for the price. Its not a crucial, but its black lol I just feel with an XF tip, your max weight of the bait goes up and its helps in ripping a bass out of the nasty. With a rod with decent sensitivity, you will feel the bite a long time before you notice the rod tip bend with you get a bite Quote
MrTexasRigs Posted June 17, 2013 Author Posted June 17, 2013 You own the model i'm looking at right? It's not too stout or like a broomstick in your opinion? Quote
38 Super Fan Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I'd give an edge to the XF as well, that said, either would be completely fine. XF vs F isn't something I'd lose too much sleep over. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 17, 2013 Super User Posted June 17, 2013 You own the model i'm looking at right? It's not too stout or like a broomstick in your opinion? No. Mine is a MXF. It has a good amount of flex in the tip for a medium. Thats why i got it for topwater. Now I do have a MHXF Crucial. Its got a good stiff tip. I can toss 1/4oz weighted plastics and 3/4 oz swim jigs with trailers with ease. Its rated to 1oz just like the Clarus. All the rod powers are close if not exact between the two. My Crucial is a 7'2" though. Quote
tritondriver Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 u can do a search on rod makers...st.croix, dobyns, loomis, etc. they all list their rods for types of lures and the tips and backbones they recommend...then make a decision. Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I Have an xf crucial and it's awesome. Go with the xf over the f. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted June 17, 2013 Super User Posted June 17, 2013 I would go with the X Fast tip, and yes I believe that thread rockchalk was referring to was a pretty good recommendation. My jig and worm rods - All my GLXs have a XF tip, my favorite Cumara has a XF tip and my DS/All purpose plastics (Crucial/Fenwick) all XF. Honestly, I think it's a preference thing and you can go either. Heck some people even use a moderate fast tip. Quote
MrTexasRigs Posted June 17, 2013 Author Posted June 17, 2013 Being the rod is 6'8" and i would assume pretty stiff, how would casting be? Would casting distance be hindered, because it won't load up good? Or? Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 If u don't throw heavy 1oz Jigs much, get a fast. If u do, get an xf. I have an xf and have no issues casting plastics. I usually use 3/16 To 1/4oz weights. Quote

TNBassin' Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 If u know youre not gonna go over 3/4oz then yeah get a fast. It will load up better than an xf for the lighter stuff. Especially if u fish from the bank. If youre fishing from a boat get the xf. Quote

So you're saying get the xf? Quote
derekxec Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 get whatever it really doesnt matter because one manufacturers xf may be different from anothers same with fast etc so if you can test it before you buy if not its not so much of a difference Quote

So you're saying get the xf? The other thing I would recommend though, especially in a boat is to get a 7'+ rod. That extra length will give you a better hook setting power, especially if you are regularly fishing deep water 15+ on a boat. That is the only optimal issue I see. It's preference and optimal, it isn't "required" if you don't want to go any longer. Quote

The only reason I'm probably buying this, is because it is a really good deal and i would like to have a more short worm and jig rod Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 17, 2013 Super User Posted June 17, 2013 Remember. A 1/2 oz jig is the weighted head. Then you have a hook, skirt and then a trailer. It puts you well over 3/4 oz. I also use my MHXF Crucial for 1/4 tubes off the bottom. It throws them 40 plus yards, I can feel every bite as if I were finesse fishing. I still think your better off going with an XF Quote
BrettD Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I prefer fast action rods when using braid and XF if using any other line. Quote
