X2 on what has been said.

If you take a peak around on japantackle it will be as great start to learning about the reels made in Japan. It would be impossible to explain all the details but folks do buy JDM reels and pay more for them. Typically the build quality is better than US reels, have more internal tuning work done and have additional eye candy on the exterior. Some reels were in very limited production runs back in the early 2000s to today with just a few hundred made. These are in higher demand among collectors looking for shelf queens or maybe a fun reel to use for special occasions. When a new JDM reel comes out the price is pretty steep plus their is the additional shipping to get it here not to mention the fact that some are hesitant to order from Japanese sites.

If your interested I would suggest reading as much as you can by just doing a Google search for a specific reel you are wanting more info on. Most casting reels I have seen don't go much lower than $125 used but in decent shape but most are going to be $150 up to a $1000+.

Just be warned it would be difficult to go back to basic stock reels after fishing some good JDM reels. Good luck with your quest!

Thank you all I kinda thought that was what it stood for but did not know for sure. I saw a review on the new shimano Calcutta d on a website and they kept talking about the differences in the reel between the two.

Keep in mind it goes way beyond reels and gets just as crazy with rods, lures and accessories as well. The boys across the pond really do get innovative with products like these to name a few....http://www.hedgehog-studio.co.jp or this http://www.baka-rush.com/. When it comes to lures you will find product and color schemes that just are not available from here in the states....Here are a few sites.....http://rossocorsa-fishing.jp/line-up-english/ ...http://www.fishingimport.com and this site is good for keeping up with what is new.....http://lurecult.wordpress.com .....Some of the sites I could not get to translate to english so you may have to go Google for that. Hope this helps you a little on your ride to an endless journey for I have not even put a scratch in the surface of what is out there.....Have fun.

It also goes way beyond the fishing world. In the import car world people are paying outrageous amounts of money for stock parts that can't be had in the USA. Like $600 for headlights for a 93 Honda because they are 1pc instead of 2pc.

For all we know the Japanese love the USDM rod and reel, just because they  want  to be different from the locals just like us here.

Trust me, they don't. If you're from Palm Beach, do you buy an Echo because all your friends are driving Lambos and you want to be different?

While I won't just come out and say JDM tackle is "worth the money"  the quality and technology they boast is unsurpassed by any other market.  You can't compare many reels to JDM Daiwas and Shimanos...

Buy the JDM one if you get a D series..  They're the same price USDM and JDM and you can get a 100 series in Japan where 200D is the smallest for the US.  I have a USDM 200D and it absolutely blows that you cannot access the VBS...  The JDM D series has a swinging sideplate like the B series Calcuttas.  Worth the $20 shipping IMO.

Trust me, your point of reference is quite off. Why would anyone compare a Lambo with Echo :tsk-tsk:

Haven't you heard of LFA ?

You should put it this way,  If you are in Japan, when all your friends are driving LFA, you get a Lambo to be different.  In Europe, when all your friends are driving a Lambo, you get an LFA to be different. Around here, when all your friends are driving a Corvette,  you get a Beemer to be different.

In fishing here, when all your friends are using CT100 GTE, you get a Conquest 100.

This is exactly while I was looking into the JDM for the 100 series and the access plate!

You won't be disappointed.  I wish I would have bought a JDM 100

I was making the point that Japanese anglers are highly unlikely to use a product with lower tolerances simply to be different. Forgive me if the illustration was a bit extreme.

bad comparison but I can assure you they have a huge interest in American muscle cars.

I can tell you first hand they do not. Been there twice this year and visited 5 tackle shops while over there. I saw a total of 3 USDM on the shelves and they were all pflueger patriarchs. In Japan it's either Daiwa or Shimano.

You just visited the place and you think you already know what the locals want.  I lived and worked there for a year but I would not consider knowing everything about them.  I just happen to know what my friends want.  It's an Asian thing we just like to own one or two things from abroad that is not readily available in the local market and sometimes not because it's a superior product but mostly to have that pride of ownership.

I never said I knew everything about them. I base my option off of talking to the locals i have access to about what they use even specifically asking if they used American made reels. Also talking about and observing what is in the shelves at the tackle stores. If they ain't stocking it it must not be selling. Believe whatever you want though. Obviously we have 2 different opinions and experiences.
