In most instances, a "sleeper" is an object that people turn their nose up at and don't give it much a chance of performing well because of construction, appearance and reputation...however if given the chance the item will perform surprisingly better than expected.

Anyone have a bait or lure or brand like this, that the general consensus has written off but really does an awesome job for you on the water?

I'd like to hear about those "Sleeper"baits and the stories behind them...

If I told ya I'd have to kill you. They're sleepers for a reason

x2. But I don't think I would KILL you. However, it may be something similar to the interrogation scene in Pulp Fiction! :P

But really... My typical sleeper Is ME sleeping in the passenger seat on the way home from a morning fishing trip.

I drive in the AM, the girlfriend drives the truck with the yaks home while I nap.

To be fair, she is a night shift RN, she can take those early mornings better than I can! Haha.

Airborne, sometimes the baits we use turn out to be sleepers for one day. Other times the baits turn out to be productive all year or for a season.

I have some baits in specific color that I use at times. Sometime they work and sometimes they don't. Go figure.

So yes, we all have our "secret baits" that may or may not work. We have confidence in them and feel good about their production.

I have a lure that's been a consistent winner for me for quite a few years catching both LMB and peacock bass.  This is a $2.99 jerkbait I used to buy at Sports Authority, I'd buy 10 or 15 at time a give them way to strangers I met while bass fishing. I saw guys catching fish with them on the first cast, still producing for me today.  I don't give them away anymore as this lure is discontinued and I have about 7 of them left, I lost one last week and I'm still cursing.

For me its not so much sleeper baits, as it is older baits.  I see a lot of people fishing whatever the hot bait right now, and they forget about older baits that have always worked for them in the past.  Case in point, Rebel humpback cranks.

Agree with bankbeater.  Tubes are killer baits and you can fish them almost anywhere, anytime.  Same with T-rigged worms, although it is tough to beat a shakey head....  Spooks are great on top, still my favorite, and some folks like spinnerbaits and buzzbaits -- they still work -- though I've never really bonded with them.

I catch bass on Storm baits.  Never see them mentioned here.  I just fish them slow and sometimes like a jig with the weighted ones.  I honestly catch a lot of things with them.  Have not used them much lately as I have been diversifying myself with new stuff but they work.

Also, bucktail jig and the old creme worms.
