airborne_angler Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I have been told that the best material to use as far as line goes, when fishing topwater is Braid...no stretch, it floats and will help muscle the fish out of matted vegetation, should the need arise. It also helps cut through that same vegetation.Of course depending on the line diameter you choose, can affect casting distance. So I was watching a video of a guy throwing a River2sea Bubble Popper. He claimed he had a secret...his secret was Fluorocarbon line...his reasoning...FC sinks and so the nose of his bait will be down a bit too, which would give it much more noise and splash when twitched. Anyone care to chime in with thoughts on this? I figure if I want the nose of my bait to sit down, ill add a snap or a split ring... Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 16, 2013 Super User Posted June 16, 2013 I fished a Spro frog this morning on 12lb yo-zuri. Not the best option, but it worked. Caught 8 of 11 strikes. When I go back to this lake again, I will have braid, even though I never use the stuff. Flouro sinks, and makes most topwater baits sit nose down and hard to walk/work. I avoid it on topwater, but I am sure some like it. Everyone has an opinion, and if his confidence is in the flouro, so be it! Jeff Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Like 00 said, if it works for you so be it, but fluoro is not for walk the dog action, I know some say they can but they defiantly are working harder and would have a better side slide with it braid or mono. I use big game for all open top water work, poppers minnow baits and spooks cause there on open water, frogs and soft plastics in weeds and slop I use braid, I still am not confident that fish don't react to the appearance of the line, and in weeds and slop I think it is concealed and unoticed. This is definitely a prime example of confidence in my setup,,,,,,,or lack of. Everything I own is spooled with braid, and all use leaders from 4' to 12' depending on what and where I am using it, except when I am fishing in slop and weeds, then a lot of the time I tie right to braid. dam0007 Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I tend to go with braid but I do have some real small poppers I throw on mono. Before you blow cash on a spool of fluoro I'd say try it with a fluoro leader and see if you like the results. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 16, 2013 Super User Posted June 16, 2013 I'm a braid only person. I actually started using braid because of top water. i use a soft action rod for my top water stuff and the braid helps me. You have to wait a split sec longer before you set the hook, but with a soft tip it works great. Some have said that straight braid tends to get tangled up in treble hooks, but I have not had this problem yet, if you do a simple mono leader will fix it. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 17, 2013 Super User Posted June 17, 2013 I've read that braid is more apt to tangle with the hooks than mono. Was using 40# braid on a MH rod last month for topwater. It did get tangled around the front hooks a few times, but whether or not mono would have tangled less is something I don't know. Can't recall losing any fish due to using braid, but if I did it wasn't more than one. My use of topwater lures before then was very limited....and always on mono back in those olden golden days. EDIT: I see rockchalk posted about braid tangling with hooks while I was typing. Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 mono has and more than likely will always be my TW line, if it aint broke Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 17, 2013 Super User Posted June 17, 2013 I've watched a small excerpt of aaron martens saying something about using fluoro for topwater as well. whether it's some super secret pro thing or sponsor hype is beyond me but i've toyed with fluoro on topwater baits and it was what i expected with a sinking line. I did not like it at all. I use an xf tip for topwater baits and have never found a reason to stray from mono. I've used braid before and it is incredibly easy to walk spooks after a super long cast but I still prefer the benefit of mono with possibility of ripping hooks with the rod I use. I do love fluoro for the majority of things though. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I prefer mono or copoly for my top water applications. Quote
