Caught a 4 pound female yesterday and she put up a hell of a fight. When I finally got her out of the water she had two circular wounds on the left side of her gill? The wounds were purplish red. Almost looks like a leech was there or something. Any ideas?

I know spawn has been over at this lake for about a month so it couldn't be fighting off brim or crappie, so it has to be leeches or something. Just never seen anything like it.

lampreys, like leeches suck blood off of other creatures. I would google it, but they have circular mouths with sucking teeth and are much larger than leeches

If the marks were right under the pectoral fin, then it was probably a lamprey. They are eel-like creatures with circular mouths that latch onto fish and suck their blood.
