This is probably a stupid question, but here goes. When a spinnerbait is listed, lets say, 3/8 oz. Is that just the weight of the lead head, or the entire bait. If it's just the lead, that would put the actual weight well over 1/2 oz.

Hootie, what drives me crazy is that we do not have "standards" in the fishing industry.

So one 2/0 hook may or may not be the same as another 2/0 hook.

Same with baits.

The manufacturers can put on their packaging what they want as it pertains to their measurements.

I purchased a Salter Stainless Steel Kitchen Scale and weigh my jigs and bullet weights just to make sure I know the correct weight.

This is what I have found with spinnerbaits: the entire spinnerbait weighs what is advertised.

For all brands I have found that a 3/8 is 3/8 and a 1/2 is a 1/2.

This weight is without the trailer and trailer hook.

Unless there is a problem with the packaging if a spinnerbait says it is a 3/4 then I would venture to say it is a 3/4.

I also use a gram/ounce scale.  MS Slammers, although close, do not all weigh the same.  I would think this would apply for all hand made wooden swimbaits whereas plastic molded ones would have more consistency.

I don't know about spinnerbaits but I do know about spoons, some lead weights too.  At one time I did weigh my spoons and the weights were not always exactly as labeled.  I did not do this for any kind of comfort issue on my rods as it's common for me to use anywhere from a 1/4 to 1.5 ounce lure on the same rod, depending fishing from an elevated position or at water's level where I may be tossing no more than 10 yds into the swash.  Lighter spoons from an elevated position tend to bounce more on top especially at the end of the retrieve, heavier spoons get more water penetration.  I pretty much have the feel for it now so I no longer weigh them.

You can get a decent gram/ounce scale at Walmart for around $25
