Burning Eyes After Day On The Water

After a full day on the water my eyes burn even with my polarized glasses on. I bought a pair of oakley monster dog fishing glasses with a blue lense last year, the polarization seems great as far as cutting glare but my eyes are fatigued and burn after a day on the water. Is this common? Should I be looking into a better pair of glasses? I don't want vision problems in the long run.

I've never experienced this and my eyes are super sensitive to the light. Are you getting water splashed in them as mist and making them irritated?

If you wear them doing yard work, do you experience the same thing?

What kind of burning are you talking about?  I also have never had this problem, other than when sunscreen or sweat would get into my eyes. 

 

I would suggest to you that your eyes are not something to monkey around with and therefore you should see a good eye doctor and discuss the problem.

Sounds like you might have sweat/sunblock getting into your eyes. Happens to me all the time when it's hot and humid out and it makes my eyes burn for awhile.

After a day in the boat on the water, I suffer from dry eyes. The wind seems to be the biggest factor. This may be the case for you. I wear prescription sunglasses and need to wear something bigger to cover them. I tried wiley x sunglasses because they seal the eyes entirely but with progressive lenses didn't work for me. These are just a couple ideas that came to mind after reading your post. Like Traveler said have those eyes checked out. You only get one pair!

When I was on the aquatic side of vegetation managment in my field of work, I experienced this a lot. It wasn't really because of my sunglasses, it was dry eyes. Your glasses are probably fine, before you do anything drastic like set up a visit with the eyes doctor$ or buy new glasses$, but some hydrating eye drops for a couple bucks and apply the eye drops before durring and after your trip. See if it helps. It made a world of difference to me.

If that doesn't work then I would start looking at other things, but I really doubt that its the glasses.

I have never used or known anyone that used blue lenses for fishing; how do they work for you?  I'm not saying they are wrong or anything against them, I'm just curious as to how they work.

I agree, dry eyes could be your problem.  And like Teal said above, eyedrops could solve the problem for you;  it certainly won't hurt to try them, and if they don't work, please see a doctor.

I'll answer some of your questions.. As far as water or sunscreen thats a no. My boat is a dry ride and the sunscreen well I forgot it at home, first day out on the water I was a little too excited. I put some in the boat locker now though. 

 

I just want to clarify on the burning eyes, its a slight burning/ irritation feeling not extreme burning but its uncomfortable. I work outside a lot during both the summer and winter on roofs servicing equipment without wearing any glasses and my eyes don't get this same burning feeling, Seems like it only happens after a long day fishing on the water. 

 

As far as the dry eyes, my mother suffers from dry eye and she often has watering eyes and is constantly bothered by it. Where as I don't- I don't know if this is the problem. 

 

Traveler, as far as the blue lense. We'll they seem to work pretty well, theyre a mix of blue and yellow I believe, When I purchased them there was a choice on lense colour, basically they broke it down to shallow and deep water lense abilities, and I purchased off of that. Shallow was up to 20' deep so thats the lense I chose. Heres the link for them.

Sunscreen in the eyes is really a hot burn for a few moments, use water proof or water resistant sunscreens and apply it to your face before you leave the house to go fishing.

Bue tinted lenses are very common for off shore fishing, Shaw Grigsby was always promoting his blue lens and it's really a personal choice, most bass anglers use dark amber or dark gray polarized sunglasses.

Water glare is intense and using eye protection is a great idea, everyone should wear polarized sunglasses on the water and use a good eye wash, Genteal works very good and keep it my boat.

Trying a new color could cause added eye strain, your eyes simply are working and adjusting to the new light source.

2. Have you tried other sun glasses while on the water, and if so, did you have any problems?

Does it almost feel like you have sand in your eyes? If so you mind have a sunburn on your eyes. Ie. Mild welders flash

Thanks, Ive had the glasses for 2 years. There isnt any smell coming off the frames or anything. I havent tried other glasses but I may have to now.

Sounds like dry eyes to me. I will have the same problem occasionally, no watering just dry and a very mild irritation.

I've actually switched to wearing a buff at all times now. I'll put a little under my eyes where my sunglasses don't cover and my nose but the rest is pretty much covered at all times.

That is what I was going to say. 

Clean your glasses when the burning starts.  When I get something on my glasses and then put my glasses on, it causes my eyes to burn.

I've had eye allergies for as long as I can remember.  Not only do they itch and burn a bit, but they get gunk in them when I am around the wrong types of pollen, mold, etc.  In addition, as I've become older my eyes dry out quite often.   Eye allergy drops that lubricate the eye work wonders for me.  I carry a small bottle everywhere I go.

 

By the way, when your eyes burn and itch, don't rub them.  That will make it much worse.

I've had this problem for years. And I do use polaroid lense glasses when on the water. A pharmacist recommended Visene-A eye drops at the end of each day. Has solved my problem. I still get irritated eyes after a day on the water....comes with the game....but this solution solves if for me.

When I fish for long hours or its windy my eyes do the same thing.  For me its from them drying out.  Its even more pronounced now after having lasic.  I carry eye drops with me and put drops in every few hrs or so.  It helps and since i've been doing this I do not have near the problems.
