Bassin30721 Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Has anybody used Tournament Choice fishing rods from Academy sports? If so, are they good fishing rods? Quote

Ima Bass Ninja Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 nope, I never heard of it, I only buy well known and high quality products that's why I only buy daiwa gearHaha that's laughable. I have had daiwa products that are anything but quality. Point is daiwa puts their name on crappy products too. To the OP the tournament choice rods are a basic IM6 blank with probably minimal quality control, but they are extremely affordable. Will they work for bass fishing...absolutely. They are an excellent choice if you are just getting into bass fishing or need a rod to carry in the truck. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 i dont know the price of the rod but I have had a lot of good experiences with my Berkley cherrywoods if your looking for other options. Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 yes any rod is good, I mean if you are getting in and thats all you need go ahead, if you think you are gonna get hardcore go for somthing more descent, the mentioned cherrywoods, maybe it is my wallmart but my aunt went through 3, back in 2011, maybe it was that lot from wallyworld, I felt and messed with one at academy today, seems descent lol Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I have had my cherrywoods for over 7 years, no problems at all. I love them for $30. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted June 16, 2013 Super User Posted June 16, 2013 I would also check out some of the All Stars from Academy. They had the Classic series on sale for $29 when I was there yesterday. They are a far cry from the All Stars of old but still a good rod for the money. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 16, 2013 Super User Posted June 16, 2013 I've had im6 rods that were very decent and an im10 that I returned an hour after I bought it. 2 rods I use quite are inexpensive, both about $55. 1 is a med spinner 7' 8/17 I use for bass fishing and the other is a 7' mh spinning I use for barracuda, really like both these rods and neither has given me a bit of problem. I'm not familiar with Academy, have no knowledge of their rods. Quote
JohnnyQuestWY Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 Yes they are great. I have two 7 foot rods. Have had these for years and they are great. They now are titled H2O but they are the same exact rods.. Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted July 3, 2020 Super User Posted July 3, 2020 It's their own brand of affordable rod. It's not high quality, but do you need it to be? I use some less expensive rods for techniques that don't require a lot of sensitivity. You know, spinnerbaits, topwaters, lipless cranks. If the action is good for the technique I'll use it. I have to admit I have two old Eagle Claw composite rods that I paid $9 for in Walmart about 25 years ago. One is on my light creek spinning combo. Caught many a bass, bream and crappie with that one. Quote

I've seen rods with broken guides, tips broke off, etc. I did find one rod on sale that was in good condition. I now have a 6' MH Berkely Lightning for $17. But this was from a few years ago. My local Walmart no longer carries rods of this high quality. Just junk for those that go fishing once a year and don't want to spend more than $25-$30 for a combo with line already spooled. 11 minutes ago, WRB said: I don't know who you all are answering to.....this is a 7 year old thread!
