Hang in there Eddie. What you asked was a very valid question. Considering the jump from a PQ to a Chronarch E is double at a full retail, it is a considerable purchase. For guys that are are used tossing around hundreds of dollars for reels it is a point, click, pay, and wait for the package to arrive... stroll in the park gig if you will. To others that are more hands on, and methodical, they are trying to find the best one right away that seems to feel like the pick of the litter.

Eddie, I bought a chronarch 50e earlier this year online without trying one in the store. I haven't done anything mechanically to it but its performance is very good right out of the box. Obviously more work on the internals and tuning and the performance goes up. I feel confident that regardless of which reel you choose you will be happy with the performance the reel provides. If you fish regularly it would be a good idea to have the reel serviced on annual basis to ensure the longevity and performance of the reel.

eddieg, one thing that I think slows the free spool on Shimanos is the oil on the brake surface. If you get one, take a qtip and clean off the brake drum. You can make it even better by cleaning the spool bearings. It takes less than a minute to remove both of them.

All of my reels are Shimano, but I got a PQ to see what the hype was aboout. While the PQ is a great reel, Shimano wins everytime.

Shimano recommends you lightly lube the brake drum. And you're right. There's no comparison between a Chronarch and a PQ.

Yeah. I got my PQ doing that after I cleaned it all up and properly lubed it. The Chronarch I was looking at in the store was only about 5 seconds long of spin. This is why i was questioning if it is something that I might want to look at before buying. Could it be possibly 1 bad reel out of 1000's? I would not have questioned if it went for like 10 seconds or more. Do they pack the bearings that much?

Every reel on the reel bar at BP, looks like poo. They have parts missing, the spool control knobs are either too loose or tight and they have been abuse and played with daily. There is a good chance it could be that. Ask to see a new one.

sounds like someone is a bit THIN SKINNED!!!! Get over it, I wont say stupid, but most of us that service reels as a business, knows how useless spinning an empty spool is to determine what reels are best!!!!   :tsk-tsk:

You’re right. I guess I do get a little thin skinned at times. Comes from the way I was raised in a society and a time when people were taught to be respectful and considerate of another’s feelings. That there are ways to get a point across without being condescending or insulting. I realize, that time and place are probably forever gone. I suppose I must accept that. But, “get over it”, I hope I never do.  Thanks for the suggestion, but no thanks.

No one was commenting on you Hootie, or are you spin testing empty spools and afraid a slower spinning one rite out of the box is an indication of good or bad????? But hey pal I don't want to hurt your feelings either.  :Victory:   Now back to the OP's, concerns, or ,,,,,, oh thats right,,,,,after doing that spin test in the shop he wasn't questioning the Chronarch,,,,,,,,,,I keep forgetting??????????  :Idontknow:

Whats funny about all of this is when Hawg Tech posted about the bearings the other day, no one mentioned how useless freespool time was....

Where is Irene when you need her?

The shop spin test hold's no salt, till you lube each reel properly it is meaningless, and even then not a true indication of performance, casting, or smoothness, as I can safely say the Chronarch is absolutely the better of those two reels! For true total performance judging it's real world use, and with that said if you check all the reel owners comments on all brands, especially those that have owned or used most brands, I think you will find you need to go other than bass pro and check out the Lew's reels also if you are looking to pull the trigger on a new reel and want the best bang for your buck, and the smooothest out there. You can't do that  at BPS as they have a hate agenda against Lew's owner and refuses to stock them.

In my first post after noticing no mention of it, if you read them you will see I made that statement 1hour and 15 minuets into this thread, I did fail to mention why!,,, it only uses 3 bearings, bushings, and a spool and will never be cast with the settings most make to watch it uselessly go around,,,,, no gears, level wind, knobs, etc etc etc, you get the picture,,,,, why so much is missed and hard to follow comments get made, is most only read the last few post when commenting,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :Idontknow:
