FajitaJoe Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Hey guys, I was barely poked today with a fish hook today while fishing. It was just a small poke, did draw a little blood but not bad. However, it was from a hook that was sitting in some very very dirty water that I left in a bucket filled with pond water and bait. I mean probably tons of bacteria. The hood was only slightly rusty. I did rinse the hook off quickly before using it but that doesn't mean I got all the germs. I was reading stories like this: http://www.theherald.com.au/story/116488/deadly-infection-from-fish-hook-wound/ I'm new to fishing but I'm sure you guys get stuck with hooks all the time. And I'm also worried about tetanus shots. Should I go to the hospital or wait for symtoms? Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted June 14, 2013 Super User Posted June 14, 2013 Are you caught up with your tetanus shot? If not you should..other than that you should be fine 1 Quote
FajitaJoe Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 I have not gotten any shot for anything since 7th grade, which was almost 20 years ago. I heard tetanus shots are awful. I'll do it if I got to though. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 14, 2013 Super User Posted June 14, 2013 BOHICA shot inbound! Quote
aceman387 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I put a dab of honey on a cut.I had read where raw honey keeps wounds from getting infected. 3 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 14, 2013 Super User Posted June 14, 2013 Get a tetanus shot - period! Quote
tholmes Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Keep the tetanus shot current. X 1,000. This is vital for any fisherman. Tetanus is not to be trifled with. Tom Quote

CountBassula Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I would watch out for a major headache in the first 48 hours since the incident. it may be the only sign of a deadly brain infection that will kill you about 10-12 days later without any other sympthomes. And if you get a fever head straight to a doc as well. The other day I got snakehead blood and water from canal sprayed DIRECTLY into my eye, and couldn't rinse it for hours. Some feared that the zombie apocalypse would start with me, but i'm still here and kicking a month or so later ;-) 4 Quote
aqualkinbush Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Like many already stated, get a tetanus shot. It's really not that bad. You don't even have to go to a Dr.'s Office go to a walgreens or CVS pharmacy with one of those "minute clinics" and you can get it done there and be in and out relatively quickly and cheaply. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted June 14, 2013 Super User Posted June 14, 2013 Tetanus shot is not bad at all. I got a treble hook deeply stuck into my thumb last year and had to go to the ER. They removed the hook gave me some antibiotics as a precaution, a tetanus shot and I was fine. I moved my arm just fine. Quote
je1946 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Man up it's just a shot, believe me tetanus is 1000xs worse than the shot Quote
fadetoblack21 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 A tetanus shot is much more pleasant than the effects of full blown tetanus. Get the shot and keep yourself up to date on it. As far as infection from the puncture, I would keep an eye on the puncture site to see if it remains irritated over a period of about a day. If it gets red, swollen, hot to the touch, or you notice any discharge from the puncture site it would be best to see a doctor about it as these are all signs of infection. I've been stuck quite a few times in the fingers and hands and have never had any troubles. I would imagine that the story that you read was a very rare occurrence for fishermen. Quote
gr8outdoorz Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I promise you that you would MUCH rather get a tetanus shot than full blown infection. You would be talking serious hospital time not to mention the cost! Get the shot!! Quote

THe most recent one was a "medium" headache and but it has since gone now that I ate something. What sickness is this? You're scaring me a bit. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 15, 2013 Super User Posted June 15, 2013 Are you caught up with your tetanus shot? If not you should..other than that you should be fine My doctor keeps me up to date on all of my shots, especially the tetanus. He knows that I bass fish and am a klutz with hooks and fins and anytime I get a bad puncture he gives another tetanus shot just to make sure. You need to have your doctor do the same for you. Quote

You're scaring me a bit. chances are it was probably just a headache but it doesnt hurt to get your shot. Im redoing my deck and got scrapped by a rusty nail about 3 weeks ago. I immediately came in the house and cleaned it out with alcohol. Havent died yet but i do plan on checking my records and going to get the shot if i need it. Quote

Tetanus, AKA "Lockjaw", is a disease that cause full body paralysis and tightens and locks every muscle in your body. Imagine dying a slow death stuck in one position when your whole body feels like your foot does when it falls asleep. Not fun. GET THE SHOT. Quote

FajitaJoe Posted June 15, 2013 Author Posted June 15, 2013 i was refering to an Amoeba infection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amoeba I think this is what you're referring to: http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/08/17/amoeba.kids.deaths/index.html Looks like it has to enter through the nose. And its usually only in warm waters. I'm in Nebraska and the water has been quite cold. Quote
